- The ideal candidate is a self-starter with an exceptionally strong network and a sharp instinct for storytelling - someone who knows how to turn relationships, insights, and moments into meaningful coverage
- This individual brings proven experience pitching and securing earned media across traditional and social platforms, leveraging deep media and creator relationships to amplify stories that break through

- Meaningful years of progressive experience in communications, public relations, marketing, business, journalism or related field

What the job involves
- The VP, PR & Communications will work across a variety of high priority company initiatives including brand announcements, launches, events and strategizing for the priorities of Overtime’s business. Overtime is a hybrid workplace, spending 3+ days in office at our DUMBO, Brooklyn location
- Draft and develop internal and external materials required for announcements including press releases, pitches, media lists and other media communications
- Build and maintain relationships with media, place general trend stories in industry publications
- Lead the award submissions process and apply for relevant speaking engagements
- Collaborate with our official marketing partners on press releases and strategic communications regarding our partnerships
- Work across the C-suite to serve as a media liaison for local, national and international press responsible for responding to all press inquiries
- Define and execute strategies to embed Overtime executives at the most effective podcasts, panels, and speaking opportunities
- Continually bring new creative and strategic approaches that will optimize company objectives and goals
- Monitor all relevant media stories involving Overtime, its co-founders and other industry news
- Lead response on any crisis communications
- Demonstrate good judgment in escalating problems and assessing communication risk
- Travel and facilitate events across Overtime’s IP
- Other duties as assigned
Our take
Gen Z prefers short-form highlights content to full sports league matches, and tight NBA licensing restrictions mean that independent content platforms can’t trim matches to cater to this younger audience. Overtime saw this problem and turned it into a market opportunity.
It has built a short-form content empire around unlicensed amateur sports leagues, with a focus on basketball. It has a substantial multi-platform presence across social media, featuring reality-TV-style dispatches and shows focused on up-and-coming players with strong viral potential.
The brand now has over 100M followers, most of them Gen Z or younger Millennials, and its videos rack up well over 3B views each month. This brings in substantial ad revenue for Overtime, supplemented with merchandise sales.
The company has also launched its own youth basketball league and pulled in high-profile backers including Jeff Bezos, Drake, and Kevin Durant, which is remarkable progress for the still relatively young company. With a comfortable and unchallenged position in this niche, Overtime looks set to continue building out a leading platform.
