Who you are

8+ years of professional software development experience
Experience creating extensible, reusable React components
Experience with TypeScript and at least one system programming language (Rust, Go, Ruby, etc)
Experience working with backend distributed systems at scale
Ability to own and deliver end to end software functionality from design/architecture, through implementation, testing, production, release, and monitoring
Ability to manage complex cross-team coordination and work closely with product owners
Ability to evaluate and communicate different engineering solutions and trade-offs
A strong willingness to learn new technologies rapidly
Experience designing RESTful and/or gRPC APIs
Experience with Kubernetes

Desirable

Experience with event streaming framework such as Apache Kafka
Experience with Rust or another systems programming language
Experience with data modeling using at least one database engine (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, Cassandra, ScyllaDB, etc.)

What the job involves

As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll be expected to take ownership of end-to-end projects that require developing in multiple languages across the stack
Your ability to consider performance characteristics, user experience, and maintainability of systems will be critical to success in this role
Your contributions will shape the way household brand names engage with their users
You will drive organizational proficiencies in key technologies and technical areas, such as scalable architecture and programming language expertis
Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers to implement new features for our Customer Engagement products, using Rust, TypeScript, and Ruby
Conduct code and specification reviews, providing technical insights to improve our features and code base
Resolve production reliability issues and ensure the system scales to meet the demands of our customers
Refactor components on the frontend, creating extensible, reusable and clean component architecture
Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies, incorporating new ideas into our engineering processes
Present Technical Specifications to other Staff Engineers, drive alignment on proposed solutions, and prototype draft implementations

Our take

OneSignal was born out of the frustration of game developers with existing push notification tools, that were not developer-friendly and did not give them a good way to re-engage users and bring them back into the game. After building its own push notification system to address these issues, the company quickly found a market gap for an easy, developer-friendly push notification system for all apps, that could be utilised by any size company.

Today, they are a customer engagement platform of choice implemented by over 1 million businesses. OneSignal's web and mobile SDK is simple for developers to install, and for marketers to use, supplying omnichannel messaging across web-and-mobile push, in-app messaging, SMS, and email.

Although there is notable competition in the space, from companies such as Braze and CleverTap, OneSignal claims uniqueness with its focus on “intelligent delivery”, which schedules notifications for the time of day users most interact with the app. The company has raised substantial funds, both in the past and more recently, that will be invested in machine learning projects, geographic expansion, and growing its team.
