Role
Who you are
- Currently pursuing a B.S., M.S., or other advanced degree in a relevant engineering field
- Plan to return to school after completing the internship
- Maintain good academic standing
- Available to commit to either a 12-week summer internship (May or June 2026 start)
- At least one prior industry internship, co-op, or relevant project experience
- Willing and able to relocate to the Bay Area, California, for the duration of the internship
- Interns may not use proprietary Zoox information in university theses, publications, or share it outside of Zoox
- Foundational understanding of manufacturing process optimization principles, including production, build sequencing, production workflows, task time analysis, and line layout
- Ability to assist in developing and documenting work instructions and assembly procedures
- Familiarity with Manufacturing Execution Systems
- Ability to identify and understand logical relationships within databases and troubleshoot issues
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, organization, and communication skills
Desirable
- Previous experience in the automotive industry
- Previous experiences in a manufacturing/engineering environment
- Previous experience with MES, SAP, or EPR Systems
What the job involves
- As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern:
- Interns in this pipeline may be considered for opportunities across a range of teams within the following teams:
- Manufacturing Process Engineering: Assist in various manufacturing processes, focusing on line balancing. This includes setting up stations, providing training, and ensuring both product quality and production rate are met
- Manufacturing Systems Engineering: Support regular production tasks, provide process assistance to technicians, act as the first line of contact for resolving manufacturing systems issues on the floor, and learn about SAP MES and Ignition system development
- Logistics Engineering: Optimize warehouse operations, ensuring inventory accuracy, building best practices, and designing packaging to protect the product while minimizing cost
Our take
Zoox, a self-driving vehicle company, was founded to make personal transportation safer and more enjoyable for all. It has aimed to achieve this goal by creating a new mode of driverless transportation, thus eradicating the safety and logistical issues that come with human drivers.
It revealed its custom vehicle design in December 2020, showcasing something different from just a car without a driver. Uniquely, all four wheels are independent of one another, and the vehicles have no front or back, making them more agile than a standard car. Zoox claims that it is different from other industry players because it has created an entire driverless ecosystem, including the vehicle itself, allowing it to have more control.
The company is fast becoming a major player in an industry that is predicted to be worth $2 trillion by 2030. Electric motors are highly desirable, particularly in an urban environment, as governments look for ways to reduce emissions and improve air quality. Zoox is aiming to play a vital role in this evolution towards more sustainable urban mobility. Amazon acquired the company in 2020 and, despite a general downturn in the sector through 2022, opened its first Zoox factory for robotaxis in 2025, and is testing the autonomous vehicles in multiple cities in the US.
