Role
Who you are
- 12+ years of engineering experience, with at least 5 years leading high-performing teams, particularly in enterprise technology and SaaS
- Proven experience managing engineering managers and overseeing teams of at least 20 engineers
- Hands-on experience in full-stack development with a deep understanding of front-end and back-end technologies, software architecture, and design patterns. You stay close to technology through design, architecture, and code reviews
- Strong understanding of SaaS software architecture, cloud infrastructure (e.g., Google Cloud Platform), and modern development practices such as CI/CD
- Comfortable working in a very fast-paced environment with experience cultivating a strong engineering culture focused on iteration, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Passionate about growing and mentoring engineers. You have a proven track record of developing people as well as delivering high-quality products
- Experience with building 0-1 products as well as scaling mature products
What the job involves
- As the Head of Engineering for Overjet’s Practice Team, reporting directly to the CTO, you will lead a high-performing, distributed engineering organization of 20+ engineers (managers & IC’s), who are responsible for building Overjet’s core AI-driven x-ray diagnostic platform that dentists and their patients love! In addition, you will oversee the execution of new product initiatives that are critical to Overjet’s long-term business strategy and growth
- Build and scale high-performing engineering teams across global locations, driving key initiatives that contribute to Overjet’s growth
- Lead your teams to execute product roadmaps, developing both early-stage and mature products that position Overjet as a leader in dental AI
- Foster a collaborative, innovative engineering culture focused on continuous learning, technical ownership, and timely delivery of high-quality software
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and architects to align goals and deliver solutions that meet business needs and improve patient outcomes
- Implement engineering best practices and develop technical strategies that balance immediate needs with long-term scalability
- Mentor and develop your team through hands-on coaching, feedback, and career growth opportunities
- Participate in and manage regularly scheduled and ad-hoc on-call rotations, ensuring system reliability and rapid issue resolution as part of core team responsibilities
- Communicate effectively with senior leadership, aligning technical direction with company goals and advocating for your team’s needs
Our take
Overjet is a medical AI company that uses machine learning to analyze dental radiographs and uncover potential causes for concern in patients' oral health. Using data that quantify bone loss, tooth decay, and gum disease symptoms, the visually driven results help dentists and patients visualize their oral health status.
Whilst helping patients with their oral health is a lucrative business, dental insurance is in a whole different realm. In 2021, the dental insurance industry crossed the $80 billion threshold, and dental AI companies like Overjet have a large stake in this surge. Their AI tool, built and developed by Harvard dentistry graduates in 2018, is utilized by leading dental insurance companies in the US to help better value the type of insurance that their customers are eligible for.
This goes some way to explain how Overjet received Series A and B funding within just 4 months of each other in 2021. The dental industry may have been slow to embrace AI technology for practical healthcare purposes before Overjet and similar companies like Adra emerged, but the same products were quickly capitalized on by health insurance providers in the US. This double incentive for investors is a promising step forward for Overjet, which continues to forge partnerships with city and state-leading dental organizations and achieved impressive Series C funding in 2024.
