Who you are
- Minimum of 5+ years of demonstrated experience in payroll and benefits administration, preferably in a start-up environment and supporting a global workforce
- Thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced startup environment with the agility and enthusiasm to adapt quickly, tackle diverse challenges, and contribute effectively to a high-energy team
- Proven experience creating and implementing strategies that drive organizational effectiveness
- In depth understanding of benefits laws and compliance requirements as it relates the the U.S., Canada, and LATAM
- Strong knowledge in HR tech stack and payroll systems; preferably Rippling, Remote.com & Bill.com
- Excellent analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills with an acute eye for detail
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across teams
What the job involves
- We are excited to hire our first-ever Payroll and Benefits Manager who will help shape how we take care of our growing team
- In this role, you’ll be the go-to expert for everything payroll and benefits, making sure our team members feel supported, rewarded, and cared for while our operations run like clockwork
- This person will sit on the People Ops team (while partnering closely with Finance) and act as our total rewards guru - someone who knows how to design smooth, global processes while building competitive programs that help us scale with ease

- Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for all team members globally - flawlessly and on time
- Deliver clear, accurate reports to our finance team
- Partner with vendors to optimize systems, resolve issues, and keep our payroll running smoothly
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures that keep us efficient, compliant, and audit-ready
- Collaborate with payroll vendors on audits, filings, and reporting
- Ensure accurate classification of team members vs. contractors in compliance with regulatory guidelines
- Manage team member benefit programs including but not limited to health, dental, vision, life, retirement plans and wellness initiatives ensuring compliance across statutory regulations
- Partner with brokers and vendors to evaluate, renew, and negotiate benefit plans that are competitive to our team and the market
- Be the trusted guide for all benefits questions and enrollment support
- Develop thoughtful, compliant leave management processes that support a scaling global organization
- Support team members through requests and approvals with care and clarity while in accordance with statutory regulations and company policy
- Manage onboarding requests and billing processes for all contractors and freelancers
Our take
The Pandemic caused a major upheaval in the US restaurant industry. Smaller operations struggled to stay afloat amidst brick-and-mortar closures, and as the demand for home delivery soared their margins were tightened further by hefty third-party delivery app charges. Add to that the fact that consumers become customers of the delivery app, not the restaurant itself, and it’s a development that has spelt real trouble for independent locales. Owner has set out to level the playing field.
Owner’s platform provides independent restaurants with the infrastructure they need to take control of their business without deferring to third-party apps like GrubHub and Deliveroo. It offers marketing, online ordering, and support solutions to over 1,000 restaurants across the U.S. The company has taken impressive first strides, too: they have a 7 figure run-rate, over 105% monthly revenue retention, and helped restaurants avoid millions in online order platform fees.
It’s a hugely attractive proposition for independent business owners, and research suggests it’s a winning idea for consumers too. Over 60% say they’d prefer to deal with restaurants directly, but historically the infrastructure simply hasn’t been in place to do so. With Owner seeing impressive traction by tripling its customers between 2023 and 2024, it's unsurprising that its 2024 funding is being channelled into engineering and design teams, alongside the development of new tools.
