Role
Who you are
- 8+ years of electronics design experience
- BS in electrical engineering, MS preferred
- Experience with the design of Electrical Medical Equipment (IEC 60601)
- Proficiency with Altium and product lifecycle tools
- Experience in flex circuits, PCB technologies and board layout
- Working knowledge of common communication interfaces (SPI, I2C, USB, MIPI, Ethernet, etc)
- Experience with the design of inductive sensing
- Experience with high-speed sampling and routing, switching power supplies, BLDC electric motors, MOSFET driving and A/D
- Experience in design for test and design for manufacturability
- EMC / EMI / ESD circuit improvement / hardening

What the job involves
- Vicarious Surgical is hiring a Staff Electrical Engineer to join our team in Waltham, MA
- You will lead the design of hardware that runs our robotic device
- You will work closely with embedded and mechanical engineers to specify and design solutions to complex real- world problems
- As a staff contributor, you will have a large impact on the architecture and direction of our electrical systems
- Designs electronic hardware for complex robotic systems
- Works closely with Mechanical team to layout the physical PCBA
- Works closely with Embedded team to support processing and sensing needs
- Manages component selection, schematic capture, and board layout in Altium
- Manages the development of assembly test equipment
- Performs board reliability assessment and failure diagnostics
- Testing and documentation for robotic hardware
- Provides guidance to product and technology teams
- Coordinates, manages, and documents project goals and progress and recommends appropriate revisions
- Sets project technical strategic direction
- Acts as mentor to junior engineers
- Leads engineering teams to the successful completion of project goals
Our take
Vicarious Surgical is developing a minimally invasive surgical robot with powerful visualization, precision, and instrument control, designed to make it "as if the surgeon is transported into the patient’s body". Requiring only a 1.5 cm incision, through which the camera and two robotic instruments are inserted, Vicarious' system boasts unparalleled visibility and manoeuvrability alongside lowered risk to the patient.
Having received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for its innovative robot, the company is well on its journey to developing the next generation of surgical robots, though - as with all medical innovations - it will still take time to be approved for full use. However, with the Vicarious Surgical Beta 2 prototype recently used to successfully perform two cadaveric ventral hernia repair procedures, interest in Vicarious' work has only increased and the company is evidently one to watch in the space.
