Who you are
- The "Bilingual" Leader: You are a seasoned systems engineer who is also fluent in Data Science
- You can audit a Go/JVM-based backend architecture one hour and discuss the nuances of vector embeddings or ranking loss functions the next
- Operational Rigor: You have experience running high-traffic production systems. You believe that an algorithm is only as good as its uptime and that engineers should be empowered to manage their own production environments

What the job involves
- Fubo is seeking a VP of Engineering to lead our Content Intelligence & Discovery organization. This leader will oversee the technical "brain" of our platform, the systems that ingest, model, and intelligently surface content to millions of users
- Reporting to the CTO, you will lead a multi-disciplinary organization that sits at the intersection of high-scale systems engineering and applied machine learning
- Your mission is to move beyond baseline heuristics toward sophisticated, high-performance algorithms while maintaining a "you build it, you run it" operational culture
- The teams:
- Search & Personalization: Our engine for user engagement. You will drive the roadmap to improve our ranking models, collaborative filtering, and semantic search
- Your success is measured by the tangible improvement of discovery quality and user retention
- Knowledge Graph: The foundation of our intelligence. This team builds the abstraction layers and semantic models that normalize massive amounts of metadata and real-time sports statistics into a unified, queryable internal graph
- Video AI (Strategic Collaboration): You will partner closely with our India-based Video AI team to operationalize computer vision and NLP outputs, ensuring AI-driven enrichment is seamlessly integrated into the Knowledge Graph and SNP pipelines
- Algorithmic Innovation: Lead the transition to more advanced ML models for discovery
- You will be responsible for the "precision and recall" of our systems, ensuring we connect users to the right content in milliseconds
- AI-Accelerated Engineering: Act as a champion and mentor for the adoption of AI-assisted development (LLMs for coding, automated testing, and documentation)
- You will help the team integrate these tools into their daily workflows to increase velocity and code quality
- Full-Cycle Operational Ownership: While you can leverage corporate infrastructure, your teams are responsible for the health of their own services
- You will instill a culture of high availability, deep observability, and proactive "ops" management within the engineering teams
- Systems Architecture: Oversee the design of resilient, low-latency data pipelines and APIs that can handle the massive scale of live-sports metadata and user-activity data
- Global Execution: Synchronize technical roadmaps between your domestic teams and international partners, ensuring a cohesive strategy for AI-driven metadata enrichment

Our take
Fubo is a live sports streaming service that operates in the United States, Canada, France and Spain. It differentiates itself from other sports braodcasters as sitting at the intersection between traditional cable and streaming, positioning itself as a must-have media provider for sports fans, with an internally-built tech stack allowing for instant replays and live interaction with sporting events.
While its core offering has always been in sports, Fubo built up a strong entertainment service, carrying content from numerous other networks and studios. Following its 2020 IPO its stocks rose sharply as a serious contender against older streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. By the end of 2022 it had an audience of 1.5 million North American subscribers and over $1 billion in annual global revenue.
Despite its strong growth, the company has entered a difficult period. Beginning to lose the market share it had taken from its competitors, it is also reducing its entertainment services and withdrawing from the sports betting market, with knock-on effects for its share prices. While still a popular service (research from TVision shows ads on Fubo Captured 35% More Attention Than Ads on CTV in General), it remains to be seen if sports fans (and investors) will stay with Fubo in the longer term, especially if it can't thread the needle of profitability in an environment of rising costs and intense competition.
