Who you are
- Prior experience with distributed systems
- Experience in Go
- Fluency with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL (transaction isolation, performance optimization)
- Fluency with event-driven architecture and concurrent algorithms
- Proactiveness in learning new stacks and having a high sense of ownership
Desirable
- Experience with Investment products or the Fintech domain, in general
- Experience in event-driven architectures, event streaming, and event sourcing systems
- Experience with Docker, k8s, understanding principles of a service mesh
- Experience with operating services in a decoupled, event-driven system, leveraging modern observability tooling (e.g. monitoring and tracing)
What the job involves
- We are seeking an experienced backend engineer with a product mindset to help us build a securities API for financial institutions, the first such API in Europe
- Together with the team, you take end-to-end ownership of advancing the integrations of the trading venues and settlement flows for our Investment API
- Our team is on a mission to empower Upvest with a wide range of trading instruments for our clients
- Current state of a Fintech world is that there’s no single standard and trading different assets come each with their nuances and complexities
- We’re here to wrap it all, hide those complexities away and give it to our clients as a single and a first-class API
- There are many challenges on a way there. As in not only scaling our product and software with the increasing number of trading venues, settlement flows and a variety of 3rd party integrations - but as well how can we serve millions of orders for millions of users in a scalable and resilient manner
- Learn what it is like to work in a growing FinTech startup, and gain an understanding of how trading venues, security custodies, clearing houses and other market participants work
- Learn to scale our domains with the constantly growing number of trading venues
- Solving fun and complex technical challenges like scaling up the throughput of the FIX - Postgres - Kafka setup as the orders inflow is rapidly growing
- Make an impact as we are ramping up the product
- Deliver fast and often. We embrace an agile methodology with a retrospective and demo at the end of the two-week cycle
- Design and build fault-tolerant, horizontally scalable systems using a Microservice architecture powered by Docker, Kubernetes, LinkerD service mesh, and Kong as a Gateway
- Build and operate event-driven applications using Kafka
- Work with cutting-edge technologies (Go is the primary language) without a legacy codebase
Our take
Upvest is a fintech startup that empowers financial services companies to provide their customers with access to a full range of financial assets, including stocks, ETFs and crypto products. Upvest's investment API integrates seamlessly with its customers existing systems and is designed to scale easily, freeing companies from the need to develop their own brokerage and custody infrastructure from scratch.
As one of the few companies in Germany that is licensed for both the custody of traditional securities and crypto, Upvest is able to provide its services across Europe. Its solution has been readily adopted by some major players in the space including Ginmon, Vivid and ABN AMRO.
Upvest is backed by a number of Europe's largest tech VCs (Earlybird, Notion Capital, Partech, HV Capital, ABN AMRO Ventures) alongside American investment monolith BlackRock. In 2023 it closed a VC investment round which the company has claimed is one of the largest in the German fintech arena. Its impressive capital raise will go some way to achieving Upvest's goals of profitability as it expands into the US market.
