Backend Engineer, Stripe

• We’re looking for Software Engineers who want to make an impact on managing money at a global scale with a passion for building ergonomic APIs
• 2-12+ years of industry software engineering experience (does not include internships nor includes co-ops)
• Strong coding skills in any programming language (we understand new languages can be learned on the job so our interview process is language agnostic)
• Strong collaboration skills, can work across workstreams within your team and contribute to your peers’ success
• Have the ability to thrive on a high level of autonomy, responsibility, and think of yourself as entrepreneurial
• Interest in working as a generalist across varying technologies and stacks to solve problems and delight both internal and external users

• You’ll play a key role in extending our balance management platform and in building out a new funds accessibility platform leveraged by enterprises and SMBs alike
• Our team collaborates with many cross-functional teams – from Infrastructure to Product – at Stripe to deliver innovative solutions that address evolving user needs
• Scope, design, build, and maintain APIs, services, and large-scale systems that reliably and efficiently handle billions of money movement requests
• Debug and solve critical production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
• Mentor engineers to help them grow
• Collaborate with stakeholders across the company to build new features at large-scale, while improving internal engineering standards, tooling, and processes
• Collaborate effectively in a distributed and hybrid team, maintaining open communication and strong connections with colleagues

• Local Payment Methods:
• Stripe’s payments products have helped to accelerate many of the world’s most innovative companies, and the Payments Methods team owns one of Stripe’s most critical workflows, a platform that processes billions of dollars in payments annually
• We see more and more payment methods coming to the Buy Now Pay Later, Wallets, Bank Debits and Bank Transfers space
• These provide more benefits to merchants and enable functionality that was not present before. These innovations are only increasing as new payment methods come to market each month
• The team is focused on increasing the coverage and adoption of locally preferred payment methods for all our users
• This includes building the payment method platform and the payment method integrations, and working on the adoption funnel to increase usage
• Tax team:
• Collecting and filing sales & indirect taxes is a classic area for technology disruption
• Companies selling across countries, states, and even smaller jurisdictions have to navigate through a myriad of tax rates, product-level tax exemptions, filing requirements, and registration obligations
• The rules are constantly changing, and not accurately calculating and filing tax can have legal ramifications
• It’s no surprise then that solving for tax compliance is a top user ask. We launched Stripe Tax as a new SaaS product in 2021 to help solve this pain point and make tax compliance as effortless as possible
• The Stripe Tax Experience team is entirely Europe-based and focuses on the user- and merchant-facing Stripe Tax product, with a focus on the calculations component of Stripe Tax
• It’s still early days, and we’re looking for strong software engineers to help build our product and business
