Company mission

Nous is on a mission to make life simpler and fairer by creating an intelligent assistant that helps UK households manage their bills, saving them money and time. We founded the business on the belief that its wrong to penalise people if they don’t have the capacity or inclination to ensure they’re always getting the fairest deal for basic utilities. Our response has been to create a service that takes care of this for them.

Role

Who you are

  • You are exceptionally bright, with world-class analytical skills
  • You're proven at working effectively in high ambiguity, high complexity environments
  • You're happy both in a complex spreadsheet or deep in a BI tool (we use Omni Analytics).
  • You're pragmatic and worldly - not just theoretical - in your outlook
  • You're highly motivated by Nous’s mission to make life simpler & fairer
  • You have exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • You're confident and effective interacting with senior colleagues
  • You're practical, scrappy & intensely pragmatic
  • You find challenge from smart colleagues stimulating rather than intimidating
  • You work well as part of a small, tight-knit team
  • You're able to absorb new information very rapidly
  • You love actually getting things done and are willing to get stuck in to whatever's required

Desirable

  • As roles go, and particularly given the level of exposure to the Nous founding team, this role has the potential to be a stepping stone into start-up land for someone who is seeking one day to develop into a leadership role in a complex high-growth business, or even who one day aspires to start their own business.

What the job involves

  • Nous is deceptively complex. On the surface it looks (or should look) like a fairly straightforward service that saves you money and time by doing things for you that you hate doing.
  • Behind the scenes, simple is hard. There is lots of extensive complexity in an agentic system — a lot of basic things it has to take care of in order to be useful at all, let alone competent, responsible and reliable.
  • Alongside the intrinsic complexity that comes with the nature of our novel product category, there is also the real practical complexity that stems from piloting a rapidly growing business. We have scaling numbers of users on the one side and a growing team on the other — before we get to the other stakeholders we need to manage as we expand.
  • To master these various streams of complexity and their interaction effects we have built out a fairly thoughtful data infrastructure. Making that work for us and getting real business value out of it however requires focus and care.
  • This Founders Associate role is therefore right at the heart of the company. You’ll be working especially closely with the founding team — Greg, Jon and Glen — and the rest of the Board, as well as across the management team, so will need to be a confident and effective communicator, comfortable expressing your ideas and insights and discussing them with (and having them challenged by) intelligent and experienced entrepreneurs.
  • You’ll be working across different teams with a lot of context switching: building financial models in the morning, designing operational dashboards in the afternoon, and making some slides for an external meeting in the evening — with some ad-hoc analysis on the impact alongside.
  • You’ll have a good level of natural commerciality. Developing and maintaining insights about Nous as it grows and deeply understanding the business as it scales is not an abstract pursuit, but an extremely practical one. You may actually have worked in a top tier business services context (consulting, banking or accounting), but if not then you certainly might have done had you opted to. Or you might have cut your teeth in a similarly demanding fast-paced start-up environment.
  • And you’ll be very good at getting stuff done — working with and through others to manage projects (some informal, some more structured).
  • Wherever you’re coming from, you’re very clear on where you want to go, and how Nous can help you get there.

Application process

  • 1. Initial video call with Head of People (to dig into experience, motivation and aptitude - no competency-based questions)
  • 2. Follow-up call with Hiring Manager (in this case, the CEO)
  • 3. Remote data manipulation task
  • 4. In-person sessions with our CEO, COO and our Product Manager.

Our take

8 out of 10 households pay much more than they need for household services. Some households overpay by thousands of pounds each year. Nous is building a new consumer service that will fundamentally change the way we run our homes, revolutionising a market worth more than £100B just in the UK.

The founding team is a bunch of seasoned entrepreneurs who have built startups from scratch through to exits for hundreds of millions of dollars. They have turned household names like Ocado into unicorns, built world-class engineering teams at Facebook, and even advised and invested in other startups, and taught entrepreneurship at Harvard. They’ve now raised one of the biggest-ever seed rounds in Europe and are set to build a business that improves the lives of millions.

Nous is an early-stage start-up building a tech platform that brings together advanced decision-making heuristics and optimisation algorithms, automation technologies, and behavioural economics to make all our lives simpler and fairer.
