Who you are
- The ideal candidate is a capable people leader with experience organizing and directing complex software projects throughout a complete lifecycle from concept to delivery to ongoing operations
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience
- 6+ years direct management experience
- 10+ years experience on high performing software teams
- Managed multiple teams and managers
- Demonstrated ability to drive a high-performing technical team
- Experience owning complex software systems from design through to production
- Proficiency in common programming languages such as Python, Go, or C++
- Experience building and executing on technical roadmaps
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
Desirable
- Experience with networking, Linux systems, and common cloud provider environments (e.g. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
- Familiarity with Information Security best practices
- Experience smoothly deploying continuously evolving data services to customers
- Experience migrating across different cloud environments
- Proven success in a high-growth startup environment
What the job involves
- Muon seeks a Director of Engineering, Ground Software to lead our Ground Software teams.
- The Ground Software organization owns a broad set of software systems that enable Muon to communicate & control our constellations & satellites and process payload data into end-products, including infrastructure, networks, and applications like mission control software, data pipelines, and customer-facing APIs
- This role is ideally located at our headquarters in Mountain View, California
- Guide several teams of software engineers that are developing Muon’s ground software systems
- Recruit and plan for an organization that will scale to meet the demands of the business as it grows
- Hire new team members & managers to build the capabilities and capacity of the team
- Be the driving force behind cultivating a technically excellent engineering team by mentoring team members and setting high standards
- Translate high-level mission concepts into the team’s requirements, development strategy, goals and roadmaps. Communicate these goals & roadmaps inward and outward
- Collaborate closely with our Flight Software, Operations, Systems, and RF teams to resolve design strategy and requirements ambiguity
- Create an inclusive, collaborative, and team-oriented culture that fosters high productivity and opportunities for growth
- Identify and implement processes, tools, and infrastructure that help accelerate our design and development effort
- Own the end-to-end development from product concept to delivery to customer/market
- Excitement to tackle diverse opportunities week to week
Our take
Developing and operating satellites represents a significant challenge. Many organizations need accurate, space-based data but lack the resources or expertise to build their own spacecraft or manage the necessary ground systems and data processing.
To tackle this issue, Muon Space provides a service called Muon Halo. This allows customers to access satellite data without having to handle the technical details of satellite construction or operation. Muon offers end-to-end solutions, including building and launching satellites, managing operations, and processing collected data.
Muon has contracts with major customers like the US Air Force and US Space Force, and it is set to launch ten satellites between 2025 and 2026. With financial backing, the company is ready to expand its services and meet the growing demand for space-based solutions.
