Role
Who you are
- Minimum of 5 years of software marketing experience
- Proficient in creating high-quality written and visual content
- Strong understanding and interest in the developer audience and developer tools
- Solid understanding of SaaS and PaaS solutions
- Experience leading product launches and releases
- Experience building lifecycle marketing campaigns
- Startup experience is a plus
- To excel in this role, you must possess experience and familiarity with marketing to both technical/developer audiences and business decision makers
- A background in technical marketing, software solutions, and developer tools is crucial
- You should also have strong collaboration skills and the ability to work across different departments, including growth marketing, outbound product marketing, sales, and customer success
- We are seeking a team member who is not afraid to experiment, possesses a keen eye for details, and can effectively turn strategy into actionable plans. Your long-term success will depend on your ability to take ownership of the GTM strategy for the Dev and Admin BU, driving the growth and expansion of Docker Desktop
- Most importantly, you should thrive on taking personal responsibility for significant objectives and be comfortable working autonomously, while maintaining a bias for strategic action
What the job involves
- Develop Business Unit messaging that aligns with Docker's corporate message
- Create and maintain core marketing content, including decks, battle cards, roadmaps, one-pagers, FAQs, demos, and videos to support both PLG and sales assisted motions
- Develop and execute product-specific web strategies
- Implement in-product marketing strategies
- Lead monthly release marketing initiatives
- Provide weekly pipeline reports
- Maintain a comprehensive marketing calendar
- Track and report on OKRs
- Familiarize yourself with the team, product, and customers
- Align with your manager on your first project
- Gain clarity on how you can contribute immediately to Docker's success
- Make meaningful contributions to the BU's objectives
- Build consensus around new processes and campaign strategies with GTM teams
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the BU's roadmap
- Align with corporate OKRs and establish individual metrics
Our take
Docker supplies a hub and desktop solution to simplify the workflow of app development teams. Originally known for popularising the idea of containerising software, it saw itself outpaced by Kubernetes. However, the company has identified a problem with the growing complexity of containerisation, with some apps consisting of dozens or even hundreds of containers - which is what it now addresses.
Docker has had a difficult time in the recent past, with 2019 seeing it sell off its enterprise business, reduce its workforce by hundreds, and change its leadership team. As a well known brand and ecosystem for containerisation, however, it aims to lure developers back to its product as well as to take advantage of the growing global demand for app development.
Returning to focus on developers rather than large companies was certainly a gamble, but one that seems to have paid off. The company has returned to profitability and raised Series C funding in 2022, which is cited to fund hiring new talent, ramping up its business, and continuing to develop and refine its product. It's also embarked on a series of acquisitions to bolster its business, with speculation mounting about its possible sale in the near future.
