Role
Who you are
- 10+ years progressive creative vision and design experience on the brand or agency side
- 4+ years as a creative director with managerial experience
- Beautiful and exceptional portfolio with demonstrated versatility across all media and channels
- Exceptional creative chops, strategic thinker and proven leadership style
- Passionate about fashion, luxury, beauty and environmental responsibility
- 360 campaign experience with a clear understanding of how each marketing channel creatively needs to be unlocked so RTR can break through, inspire and ‘wow’ new and existing customers
- Understands the big picture and can see ideas through all parts of the execution, creating a team of best-in-class art directors and designers
- A deep knowledge of the ‘new’ fashion, publishing and lifestyle verticals as it pertains to creative excellence, storytelling and how strong, meaningful creative can drive growth, loyalty and brand affinity
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an extremely disciplined and high attention to detail
- Experience leading and managing a team of creative thinkers and doers
- Comfort with being uncomfortable and willing to take creative risk
What the job involves
- You are joining a new leadership team and working closely with the VP of brand marketing and creative to launch impactful campaigns that are anchored in editorial and storytelling to acquire a new customer, inspire and retain an existing customer, resulting in growth
- Partner closely with the VP of brand marketing and cross functional leadership team to create a unified brand experience to drive brand awareness
- Lead, direct and inspire a team of art directors, graphic designers, video editors, copywriters and outside agency support creating award winning work that comes from strong and effective internal partnerships and collaborations
- Create Bold and brand exciting campaigns that celebrate the brand’s positioning and pillars. Deliver thoughtful creative solutions that differentiates and strengthens RTR market position and business results
- Oversee the strategy and design of multiple touchpoints, such as brand campaigns, print and digital assets, video production, post-production, all website content, social media, email/SMS marketing, partnership support, media/ads and events
- Manage and oversee in-house studio creating a highly functioning team that understands and executes the brand vision
- Source and partner with creative agencies (when needed) to deliver world-class campaigns, media and content to elevate the brand
- Drive your team to operational excellence to scale and create all assets that are needed to succeed in today’s marketing/brand landscape
- Promote continual creative improvement and actively contributes to a culture of innovation, excellence and accountability
- Create, ensure and delegate all the company’s visuals are consistent and on brand – developing brand style guides that are detailed, clear and speak to today’s consumer
- Work closely with marketing team to secure all projects are delivered on-time and within the defined budget allocations
Our take
Rent the Runway seeks to profit from two important trends in apparel consumption: wanting to stay on top of the latest fashion trends while living and purchasing sustainably. By providing a platform for women to rent designer pieces, its users can have it all.
The company allows users to rent, subscribe, or buy designer apparel and accessories. It achieves this with its network of partnerships with hundreds of top designers and managing the crucial but complicated logistics in-house. It offers its partnered brands sophisticated analytics about potential customers in return for lower prices on designer garments.
Rent the Runway is now focused on diversifying revenue streams while reducing its costs. Its recent partnership with Amazon is an example of this new direction: while it will use this channel to sell clothes previously rented through its platform, it will, for the first time, be selling new clothes based on rental items modified in line with market data.
While moves such as this may well shift Rent the Runway towards profitability, it also risks undercutting the company's central message of sustainability and supporting the circular economy. The company believes that by creating better quality clothing, it will nonetheless be aiding in the fight against fast fashion. Time will tell if this move helps or hinders the sustainability movement, but it is likely to boost Rent the Runway's bottom line regardless.
