Role
Who you are
- Are you a talented and Backend Engineer (Ruby) with a strong interest in all aspects of web development and e-commerce
- Write pragmatic code that gets the job done, is easy to read, maintainable and performant
- Have 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer, with at least 3+ years with Ruby on Rails and backend systems
- Are comfortable working with critical systems, monitoring and troubleshooting production issues, preferably in a large RoR codebase
- Have proven ability to collaborate effectively in a hybrid, cross-functional team environment
- Have excellent communication skills, enabling you to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical team members
- Have a passion for staying up-to-date with the latest technologies and industry trends
Desirable
- Familiarity with modern Javascript (Typescript) and have worked with popular Frontend Frameworks
- Experience with AWS, GCP or other cloud platforms
- Experience with Cloudflare or other CDNs to optimise website performance
- Experience with Ruby e-commerce frameworks like Solidus and Spree is a big plus
- Knowledge of eCommerce concepts, such as cart management, payment gateways, and product catalogues
What the job involves
- Get ready to make a real impact in a certified B Corp as our new Backend Engineer (Ruby) and shape the future of digital retail
- In this role, you will be working on our backend APIs, internal tools as well as our web and retail client applications.By collaborating closely with our team of engineers and designers, you will elevate our e-commerce and retail experience of both customers and internal staff
- A little bit about the technologies we’re using: Our backend is built on Ruby on Rails (Solidus), hosted on AWS and our frontend is written in Typescript and uses React / NextJS on Vercel
- This position is immediately available (32- 40 hours) at our HQ at the Singel in Amsterdam. As part of a hybrid team you'll collaborate with colleagues living in Spain, France, Luxembourg, Portugal & The Netherlands
- Participating in the full web development lifecycle, from ideation to deployment
- Working on the evolution of our Solidus ecommerce environment
- Developing and maintaining our e-commerce APIs and infrastructure
- Actively contributing to our web/store client applications and internal tools
- Designing, building, and maintaining efficient, reusable, and reliable Ruby code and libraries and services
- Working on integrations with other Ace & Tate systems as well as third party integrations
- Engaging in continuous testing, bug fixing, automation and code reviews to maintain high-quality standards
- Integrating data storage solutions like PostgreSQL,Redis, S3 etc

Prescription eyewear can be expensive, unfashionable and overly complicated to purchase. Ace & Tate solves this problem by manufacturing and selling high-quality designer eyewear directly to customers.
Unlike more traditional optometrists and eyewear outlets, such as Specsavers, Ace & Tate's stores are modelled as bright, spacious boutiques. This appeals directly to fashion conscious customers, and has proven lucrative for the company so far. On top of this, the brand offers free eye tests, and as it cuts out unnecessary middlemen. Its glasses start at under £100, significantly less than other boutique eyewear brands.
The brand now operates in seven countries, and is looking to grow its operations considerably. The company will have to scale without endangering the sustainability of its product if it is to hold onto its already impressive following.
