Who you are
- BS in Computer Science or closely related field
- 7+ years of software engineering experience
- Experience owning the development of web applications
- Experience with React, Typescript, and modern front-end development
- Experience building interactive tools as webapps
- Experience with Go or similar server-side language
- Experience with containerized solutions such as Docker, Tilt, Kubernetes, etc
- Strong and proven teamwork and collaboration skills
Desirable
- Experience with live video streaming systems, WebRTC
- Experience with gRPC and Protobufs
- Experience with AV / Robotics products
What the job involves
- The Remote Assist team accelerates the delivery of our self-driving system, increases the on-time arrival of freight shipments, and improves the behavior of our autonomous trucks on the road
- We do so by delivering a tool for human operators to remotely assist the self-driving system in complex and ambiguous situations
- The Remote Assistance team is a very broad full-stack team
- We deliver on complex user interfaces, reliable and scalable cloud infrastructure, live video over cellular connections, new autonomy capabilities, and integrations with the autonomy system
- We’re a dynamic and pragmatic team that has superpower in-house abilities to categorically change the trajectory of our company’s success
- Own the operator tooling and cloud infrastructure for the Remote Assist system, including the specification, design, development, rigorous testing, performance optimization and maintenance of our web application, and heavily influence the entire end-to-end Remote Assist system
- Founding member of an uncommonly broad end-to-end team that includes front end, cloud, and robotics engineers working together on a single product. Excited to work across our entire codebase and sees it as positive to contribute to front end, cloud, and even sometimes onboard C++ code on the robot
- Partner closely with the Director of Remote Assistance and partner teams including design, fleet monitoring engineering, infrastructure engineering, etc
- Take part in on-call rotations
- Travel to our headquarters in Pittsburgh regularly to spend time in our test vehicles, with our operations center, and on our test track
Our take
Driver shortages, decelerating efficiency and broad safety concerns have plagued the US trucking industry for some time now. High operating costs paired with increasingly scrutinized high emissions are leading to concern over the future of the logistics and goods transport market. Stack AV’s autonomous trucking solution aims to lighten the load of these issues, using AI to create smart supply chains and autonomous driving systems.
Its founding team have long been exploring the possibilities of autonomous transport through combined experience with Uber, and Google smart cars and shared founding roles at Argo AI, a similar company that disbanded in 2022 after it failed to become profitable for shareholders. Hopefully, however, the launch of Stack AV will balance the decades of experience as well as hard lessons learnt from the failed predecessor company and will find new ways to make autonomous driving tech a sustainable investment.
With a staggering $1 billion invested in Stack AV by SoftBank in 2023, the company is well-armoured for the time being. Its main competitor is Aurora, which underwent a successful IPO in 2021 but never achieved the high level of early funding that Stack AV did. It’s a promising start then for the Argo AI veterans' new venture.
