Role
Who you are
- Significant demonstrated experience with end-to-end (hybrid UX and UI) product design for consumer-facing products
- The ideal candidate has significant experience leading design for consumer fintech products
- Thinks in systems, designing solutions that scale across products, adapt to future needs, and create consistency beyond individual features
- Strong visual design sensibility with the range to move fluidly between systemized UI and more expressive, brand-forward moments
- A craft-obsessed designer who strives for quality and has an amazing attention to detail
- The ability to lead design for important projects with experience delegating work and giving direction to other designers
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills (you should be able to clearly articulate your design decisions and the logic behind them)
- The ability to think at a high level about product strategy and vision (not just 'how it should look' but 'what we should build')
- Experience in building and shipping applications or software (mobile/web)
- Uses AI as a creative and productivity multiplier — able to move faster and explore more ideas without sacrificing craft or judgment
- Must have a portfolio featuring examples of design work
- Education: Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

What the job involves
- Step is looking for an experienced product designer who can lead the overall product, design, and UX strategy for our core banking platform.
- We are a design-focused consumer banking product that works on physical products, digital products, and mobile apps. We're looking for someone to roll up their sleeves, lead design on individual features and make design decisions in a role with plenty of room to grow.
- The ideal candidate is a passionate designer who is proactive in product ownership, comfortable working closely with cross-functional teams to influence product strategy and rally them around elegant, innovative mobile solutions that delight our customers
- Design high quality interactive experiences across mobile, both iOS and Android, and web
- Lead projects throughout the entire design process; from creative conception to production and release
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering and Marketing to help define strategy, and the roadmap to achieve business objectives (growth)
- Collaborate and give feedback/direction to other designers to continually push the level of quality on the team
- Evaluate current processes, identify best practices, develop plans to reach goals and implement improvements
- Utilize and contribute to the Step Design System
Our take
Thanks to an increasingly mobile-native and plugged-in younger demographic, fintechs have a new market to play for: teens and young adults. It’s led to fierce competition, but Step is one of the players leading the pack.
Step’s offering is a fee-free, interest-free visa card, with instant payments and easy account management that is optionally controlled by a parent (or sponsor). The idea is to offer a relatively low-risk sandbox in which young people can build up financial literacy along with a good credit score, whilst enjoying the benefits of digital banking.
Some savvy TikTok marketing by Step, along with flashy backing from celebrity investors, has helped it rapidly onboard over 3 million users and cultivate strong name-brand recognition. In 2026 it was acquired by MrBeast's company, a move which Step hopes will amplify its platform so that it can broaden its reach.
