Who you are
- 5-10 years of software engineering experience with strong backend expertise
- Proficiency in modern programming languages (Java, Python, Node.js, Go, or similar)
- Experience building and deploying production systems at scale
- Strong understanding of software design patterns and SOLID principles
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Deep knowledge of API design principles and RESTful/GraphQL patterns
- Hands-on experience building and scaling microservices architectures
- Understanding of service mesh, API gateways, and inter-service communication
- Experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes)
- Knowledge of event-driven architectures and message queues
- Hands-on experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) or similar AI frameworks in helping deliver faster and better
- Demonstrated use of Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar AI development tools in production work
- Experience implementing AI in CI/CD pipelines (code review, testing, security scanning)
- Built agentic AI solutions or AI-powered automation tools
- Understanding of prompt engineering, model selection, and LLM capabilities/limitations
- Achieved measurable productivity improvements (2-5x) using AI in development
- Implemented AI-assisted refactoring, test generation, or documentation at scale
- Experience with AI code analysis and automated code quality improvements
- Track record of shipping production systems built with significant AI assistance
- Strong proficiency in at least one backend language (Java, Python, Node.js, Go)
- Experience with microservices frameworks (Spring Boot, Express, FastAPI, etc.)
- Database expertise (SQL and NoSQL)
- API design and documentation tools (Swagger/OpenAPI, Postman)
- Version control (Git) and CI/CD platforms (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI)
- AI coding assistants (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar)
- Usage of observability tools
What the job involves
- This role is part of our Digital Platform Services team, who are responsible for delivering central services to the divisions in an API first way by utilising AI to pioneer of AI-first development practices
- Tasked with building modern, scalable software solutions using cutting-edge AI tooling to demonstrate what's possible when AI is deeply integrated throughout the entire development lifecycle (SDLC/PDLC)
- As a senior engineer, you’ll be a hands-on contributor focused on delivery. You'll ship high-quality code (Java) in fast cycles while showing other engineers how AI transforms productivity, code quality, and development velocity. You'll leverage AI to accelerate every phase of the software development process—from design and implementation to testing and deployment
- Design and implement scalable microservices with API-first mindset
- Develop RESTful, GraphQL APIs as needed with comprehensive documentation
- Build cloud-native applications using modern architecture patterns
- Deliver well-tested, production-grade code with CI/CD automation
- Ship features quickly using AI to accelerate development cycles
- Use AI for all coding tasks: feature implementation, refactoring, test creation, documentation, debugging
- Employ Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and LLM APIs to write better code faster
- Apply AI-assisted code analysis, optimization, and security scanning
- Achieve measurable and significant productivity improvements through AI integration
- Demonstrate when to use AI vs when human judgment is critical

- Document patterns and share learnings about AI-first development
- Mentor team members on effective AI tool usage and prompt engineering
- Measure and communicate productivity gains from AI integration
- Establish best practices for AI-assisted code generation and review
- Demonstrate practical AI applications that solve real development challenges

Founded in 1974 by Stuart Wheeler as a UK-based spread betting company for gold, IG Group, abbreviated from Investors Gold Index, was initially set up to allow people to speculate and trade on the price change of gold without owning physical gold. And in the year 2000, it was listed on the London Stock Exchange and its gradual evolution into the world of fintech began.
By 2011, the company had played a part in numerous international buyouts before narrowing its focus down to financial wagers. During the latter half of that decade, IG shut down its binary options trading platform and focused instead on building an investment portfolio with partner BlackRock Investments, all whilst maintaining its Forex and CFD trading processes. Since then, it has become a fast-paced market leader in the investment space.
In recent years, IG Group has developed major platforms for various trading actions and has grown profit and revenue significantly. Alongside this it has acquired a number of companies, including tastytrade and Freetrade, and launched its own crypto product, making it the first UK-listed company to launch crypto trading to retail investors. This further proves how much of a staple IG Group is in the world of financial trading.
