Who you are
- Proven experience in backend development
- Proven experience in frontend development or a strong desire to become proficient
- Excellent knowledge of PHP, including an understanding of its strengths and weaknesses
- Computer Science or Tech-related degrees are a plus
- Familiarity with Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), especially in JVM languages, is an asset
- Solid knowledge of SQL databases, preferably MySQL
- Strong understanding of database design and overall reliability
- Quick to learn: If terms like caching, sharding, and replication are new to you, that's okay. What's important is your willingness and ability to grasp these quickly
- Proficient in *nix console environments
- Proactive, collaborative, and excellent in communication
What the job involves
- Bumble is seeking an expert Full Stack PHP Engineer to help in the ongoing development of our large-scale mobile and web applications backend
- You'll be a key player in our web development team, which collaborates across Bumble’s different platforms including recent acquisitions like Fruitz and Official
- Your primary focus will be developing high-quality backend and frontend solutions, especially with PHP and React
- This role will be focused on backend coding and database design. Millions of our users will see the results of your work every day, so we pay special attention to the performance and reliability of our system
- This role will also pioneer the formation of a full stack development team transitioning away from purely frontend
- Lead the transition from a frontend-centric team to a fully integrated full-stack team
- Participate in the design and development of a large-scale backend API (PHP/MySQL/NoSQL) and frontend applications (React)
- Contribute to our large-scale backend API, serving millions of active users
- Optimize both backend and frontend code, identifying bottlenecks and implementing monitoring and visualisation systems as necessary
- Spearhead innovative, high-tech solutions that will advance our various platforms
- Collaborate with team members to refine application designs, promoting best practices in both backend and frontend coding
- Engage in all stages of development, from concept to deployment and ongoing support
- Work effectively with cross-functional teams across the business to ensure alignment and smooth execution of projects

Bumble's founder was a co-founder and VP of Marketing at Tinder (she ultimately left among allegations of sexism at the company). This would have given her great insights and experience into the dating market as it began to come online - enabling the company to build for what people want.
Bumble's selling point, as it competes with a pile of other dating apps, is that is empowers women to make the first move by giving them the ability to control the conversation. This has certainly proved popular, and is no doubt one of the reasons behind its success so far.
