Role
Who you are
- Reporting to the Director of Revenue, the ideal candidate will be detail oriented, self-motivated, results driven, and posses an ability to focus and to research root causes as problems arise
- This role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, has a strong operational mindset, and is excited to collaborate cross-functionally to scale billing systems and workflows
- 4+ years of work as a billing professional in in billing, order management, revenue operations, or a similar operational finance role
- Associate Degree in Accounting or Finance or other business degree
- Strong experience with NetSuite and other ERP or financial systems
- Detail-oriented and highly organized, with a strong ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- A customer-first mindset—balancing operational accuracy with exceptional customer service
- Excellent critical thinking, analytical and communication skills
- Highly proficient in Excel and Google Sheets
- Driven to lead and contribute to system enhancement and automation projects
- Ability to manage and simplify complex billing workflows
- A solutions-oriented team player and effective communicator with all levels of management and cross functional organizations
- Positive attitude and willingness to collaborate with team members on various assignments, regardless of their level of complexity
What the job involves
- Responsible for customer invoicing, cash receipts and providing excellent service to both our external and internal customers, the Billing Analyst role plays a critical part as a member of our Accounting Team
- In this role, you will help with invoicing, responding to customer questions and escalations, and assessing and processing billing adjustments
- You'll execute day-to-day billing operations for all customers
- Respond to customer billing inquiries and resolve issues thoughtfully, delivering a high-quality billing experience
- Maintain strong documentation and uphold billing policies, controls, and audit-readiness standards
- Prepare and/or review monthly invoices and provide metrics to Finance leadership
- Monitor Accounts Receivable aging and maintain reporting
- Communicate directly with key customer and internal contacts to resolve past due balances
- Lead or contribute to system enhancement and billing automation initiatives
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders to facilitate accurate, timely, and complete resolutions on outstanding matters impacting invoicing
- Serve as a go-to contact for internal stakeholders on billing data and metrics
- Assist with special projects as needed by Management
- Drive continuous process improvement initiatives and implement scalable solutions to improve billing accuracy and collection processes
Our take
The largest mass transit system in the US is student transportation, and it’s more than double the size of all others combined. It’s rife with inefficiencies, however: circuitous routes mean many students are spending more time travelling and less time sleeping, exercising, or participating in enrichment activities, affecting student outcomes and inequalities.
Zum is looking to overhaul school transport with the help of cloud computing and AI. It has a central hub from which it manages route planning and vehicle assignments across 4,000 areas and school districts in California, meaning fleet deployment, maintenance, and operational efficiency can be optimized. It also offers cameras and tracking in vehicles, and is committed to having a fully electric, 10,000-strong bus fleet by 2025.
It's an ambitious plan, but it’s clear that the US school busing system is in dire need of an overhaul. We’re seeing startups like Via offer a similar service to NY schools, gathering similarly strong momentum. With Zum fast approaching Unicorn status, and its California roll-out continuing without a hitch, it appears, for now, to be leading the modern student transportation startup pack.
