Who you are
- If you're excited about designing communication and AI at scale - this might be it
- Bring 8+ years of product design experience with a portfolio showcasing exceptional user-centered interaction design
- Manage complex projects involving cross-functional and cross-team stakeholder groups, spanning different timezones
- Understand and handle visual design with a passion for polish and an expert eye for detail
- Be comfortable in Prompting, Vibe Coding, Cursor, FigmaMake (and other relevant tools) for both design and prototyping
- Be a systems thinker with the ability to contribute back to our design systems library
- Bring excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate positions to influence and work with partners, with new design thinking
- Have an understanding of user-centered design principles and design thinking practices
- Have a Bachelor's or equivalent practical experience
What the job involves
- As the Lead Designer, you will shape the future of business phone communications with AI
- In this role, you will independently own significant product areas, leading the end-to-end design process while mentoring other designers both in the US and China
- You will also leverage your deep understanding of UX best practices and technical constraints to create innovative solutions that scale
- The team focusses on developing a flexible, mobile, and powerful cloud phone system that can handle complex workflows in calling, messaging, and voicemail
- As part of the team, you’ll join a group of passionate, collaborative, and impact-driven designers who obsess over every pixel and interaction
- We work closely with product, engineering, research, and accessibility teams to shape the core experience
- Designing at Scale - Lead high-impact, mission-critical projects that define the future of Zoom Phone. Own the design strategy and execution end-to-end with emphasis on refined, production-ready visuals
- Partnering with cross-functional teams to align on product direction, deliver impactful work, and champion design excellence across surfaces
- Driving high-quality design, while collaborating closely with design leadership to bring clarity and consistency across projects, and ensure design decisions align with the broader vision
- Setting and upholding a high bar for visual and interaction design quality. You have a love for polished UI and instincts for layout, spacing, motion, and micro-interactions
- Leveraging both qualitative and quantitative data to guide design decisions, evaluate success, and identify opportunities for improvement
- Owning design execution in Figma and deliver pixel-perfect visuals, robust prototypes, and clear specifications for engineering partners

Our take
Zoom reworked video conferencing when most people assumed it was a solved problem, with services from Cisco and Skype already ubiquitous in workplaces and homes. However, its videoconferencing infrastructure was simpler to use, faster and more flexible than any previous solution, and it swiftly took the world by storm.
Its success bred competition, however, and companies such as Microsoft and Google, along with numerous smaller communications firms, have begun making inroads on Zoom's formerly commanding lead. Additionally, as workplaces are mostly adopting a hybrid or flexible working strategy, some of its importance as a workplace tool is wearing off and it is recording a gradual decline in daily usage rates.
To counter these trends, Zoom is expanding its business offerings through product development and strategic aquisitions, such as that of Solvvy (an AI and automation service) in 2022. It remains to be seen if this will be enough to turn things around for Zoom: along with many other large tech companies it has recently engaged in large-scale layoffs to realign itself with a difficult economic situation. Still, it is a profitable company and a household name, and its track record of innovation means it is still very much one to watch in the communications space.
