Role
Who you are
- The ideal candidate will have deep mobile experience, including knowledge of how they integrate with cross platform technologies
- Background with building high availability and mission critical systems
- Experience with leading an engineering team
- Ability leading and executing large, complex technical initiatives
- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant technical field such as computer science or equivalent years of practical work experience
- 8+ years of post-Bachelor’s software development experience; or a Master’s degree in a technical field and 7+ years of post-grad software development experience; or a PhD in a related technical field and 3+ years of post-grad software development experience
- 1+ years of experience managing a team of engineers
- Hands-on experience with mobile development (iOS or Android)
Desirable
- Experience with cross platform mobile frameworks
- Proficiency in one or more of: C++, TypeScript, Android, or iOS Development
- Track record of delivery in rapidly changing, highly collaborative, multi-stakeholder environments
- Experience contributing to or leading an Open Source project
What the job involves
- The Valdi Team owns the Cross Platform technology that powers significant pieces of almost every feature on Snap. Hundreds of developers rely on it not just for user-facing UI, but also significant amounts of shared business logic as well. Additionally, we have proudly Open Sourced Valdi on our GitHub
- This is a hands-on role - your experience in C++, TypeScript, as well as native platform pieces will be critical in solving tricky performance issues and creating stable architecture
- Additionally, since this is such a core piece of Snap’s infrastructure you’ll need to work closely with customers to determine our long term roadmap as well as ensure the team is solving customer issues
- Manage and mentor a team of C++, TypeScript, Android and iOS, in a fast-paced, quick-to-market environment
- Set the strategy, build a roadmap, create measurable goals, and lead your team to deliver
- Set the direction for Snap’s largest Open Source project and grow a community
- Evaluate the technical tradeoffs of major decisions and be a strong technical mentor
- Hire, grow and retain high-performing team members
Our take
Snap Inc. is the social-media company behind Snapchat, a mobile app launched in 2011 that prioritises visual and emotive communication over traditional texting. Born from a desire to share real-time moments with authenticity, the app now boasts a massive global reach with daily active users surpassing 460M and monthly active users well beyond 900M.
After rejecting a billion-dollar acquisition offer from MEta Platforms (then Facebook) in 2023, Snapchat entered into a long-term rivalry with Meta's apps (most notably Instagram). Despite the competition, Snap has carved out a distinct place in the social-media landscape by innovating features such as the "Discover" tab, augmented-reality (AR) lenses, in-app gaming, paid subscriptions via Snapchat+, and robust ad-monetisation options.
Snap has yet to post a full-year profit since going public in 2017, but the company is clearly making progress. In Q1 2025 the net loss was narrowed to roughly $140M, down from $305M the year before, and revenue rose 14% to $1.36B. Advertising revenue remains periodic and macro-factors still pose headwinds, yet Snaps enduring popularity and its expanding product mix suggest that further success appears likely.
