What the job involves
- We’re seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead two high-performing teams to deliver integrations and new customer features
- You’ll oversee the entire software development lifecycle, from architecture through deployment, while still getting into the code when it matters
- As the bridge between engineers, product, and leadership, your purpose is to deliver technical excellence, foster continuous improvement, inspire change that rallies teams and align engineering efforts with Certn’s business goals
- This role gives you the chance to own critical system components and directly influence customer experience and platform stability
- You’ll collaborate with passionate engineers, product managers, and leadership, and see the results of your work in delivering scalable, high-quality software
- People Leadership: Coach, mentor, and conduct 1:1s and performance reviews. Cultivate team morale, engagement, and professional growth
- Project & Delivery Management: Drive execution of roadmaps, coordinate sprint planning, remove obstacles, and ensure on-time, high-quality software delivery. Act as liaison between engineering, product, and design
- Development Practices & Automation: Define and enforce scalable architecture standards, oversee design reviews, and champion technical excellence across both teams
- Hands-On Coding: Jump into Python or C# on the back-end and TypeScript or React on the front-end to unblock critical issues, prototype new features, and set a high bar through code reviews
- Change Leadership: Drive continuous improvement by leading through change, influencing stakeholders, and motivating teams to adapt and grow in a dynamic environment

Our take
Certn’s platform allows people to gain fast access to background checks, from criminal records through to motor vehicle records and even credit checks. Its software allows recruiters to save time and money in the hiring process, as the standard 3-4 days for completing background checks is reduced to hours.
Currently, the solution is used by over 2,800 enterprises, including leading employers, staffing firms and property management companies. However, it is not the only player using AI to conduct background checks; Checkr, GoodHire, and HireRight are some of the leading companies that are solving this years-old problem in different parts of the world, and Certn will have to work hard to stand out in this crowded space.
The company looks poised for a period of rapid international expansion over the next few years, thanks to considerable funding amounting to $115 million in 2023 and the acquisition of UK-based background check provider Credence and Australian Intercheck. It also astutely hired CTO Susan Davis (ex-VP of Engineering at Dessa and Xtiva Financial Systems) in 2021.
