Role
Who you are
- Markforged, located in Waltham, MA, is looking for a highly-motivated and experienced engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, growth-focused environment
- You must be able to work well in multi-disciplinary teams consisting of mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineers
- Familiarity with electrical engineering and software development principles will be beneficial
- At least 5 years hands-on experience designing complex electromechanical products including industrial automation equipment, robots or similar systems
- B.S. in mechanical engineering, M.S. preferred
- Demonstrated ability to produce innovative solutions to challenging problems
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
- Ability to quickly identify problems and implement solutions
- Ability to maintain schedule and work within budgetary constraints
- Ability to drive projects to completion
- Strong technical background in a number of the following areas:
- Machine design and kinematic analysis
- Design for manufacturing (FMEA, DFM and DFT)
- Electronics packaging & thermal management
- Electro-mechanical actuators & sensors
- Experience with a number of the following tools is a significant asset:
- Numerical modelling and analysis in Python, Matlab/Simulink, or similar
- FEA (Ansys, Nastran, etc…)
- PDM & PLM
- JIRA or equivalent project management software
- Excellent team player; comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic, interdisciplinary team comprising mechanical, electrical and software engineers, as well as designers, product managers, manufacturing & operations personnel and external stakeholders
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills
- Ability to create and communicate an accurate schedule
What the job involves
- As a key member of the engineering team, you will be responsible for leading a variety of mechanical design and sustainment efforts across a range of 3D printing projects
- You will be expected to have a firm grasp of every element required for mechanical product development, including concept generation, design (CAD), analysis, prototyping, test/verification, and transition to manufacturing partners
- In some cases you will lead junior engineers and consultants to help accelerate the development process
- Your work will have an immediate, tangible impact on the lives of our thousands of current and future customers
Our take
Markforged develops and manufactures metal and carbon fibre 3D printers. There’s been a huge surge in 3D printing businesses as technology improves and demand grows, and so there’s plenty of competition for Markforged in the form of companies such as Desktop Metal, Formlabs and Stratasys.
3D printing has seen some strong growth in recent years, and that’s expected to continue as companies look to the technology to expand beyond the rapid prototyping for which it’s best known. Metal printing from the likes of Markforged and competitors including Desktop Metal are seen as an important step, offering far more durability than plastic deposits.
The business has strong clients, including Disney, NASA, Rolls Royce, and the US Air Force. And in 2023, it launched the FX10, its first industrial 3D printer capable of printing both metal and advanced composites. Alongside this, the company is set for new growth, having recently been acquired by Nano DImension. This merger will strengthen their position in the 3D printing market, combining expertise in composite and metal solutions with Nano Dimension's digital manufacturing innovations.
