Who you are
- We’re looking for someone who thinks big, sweats the small stuff and keeps things simple
- We're looking for a Sr Software Developer who can guide complex technical initiatives across the finish line while making other developers more effective
- We need someone who can lead delivery, partnering with teams across the company to migrate dozens of services to a federated model
- Strong experience with GraphQL, including schema design and performance considerations
- Familiarity in API design patterns across REST and GraphQL, with the ability to provide direction on how internal and client-facing APIs should evolve, what standards to adopt, and when to break from them
- A track record of delivering technical work that spans multiple services, with the ability to coordinate dependencies and maintain momentum
- Solid software development fundamentals, with experience building and maintaining production systems. Experience with Ruby or Node.js is a plus
- Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach—you bring people along through documentation and genuine partnership
- A pragmatic approach to technical decisions, balancing ideal solutions with shipping impact
What the job involves
- The Edge team sits at the intersection of Wealthsimple's backend ecosystem and our client applications
- We own the GraphQL gateway and the public API, along with the tooling, patterns, and best practices that help all our product developers ship features quickly and reliably
- Reporting to a Senior Manager of Software Development, you'll work alongside developers and cross-functional partners to shape our APIs and how data flows through our systems
- This year, we're leading Wealthsimple's migration from schema stitching to GraphQL Federation—a foundational shift that will make our gateway faster, more predictable, and essentially maintenance-free
- You'll help us implement our big project this year, GraphQL Federation architecture
- You'll balance hands-on coding with technical leadership, unblocking teams, refining our approach as we learn, and ensuring we ship a gateway that product teams never have to think about
- You'll contribute to our GraphQL Federation migration, working with GraphQL Mesh and Hive Gateway to move services from schema stitching to a fully federated supergraph
- Build and improve automation tooling, including AI-assisted migration scripts, that accelerates schema transformations
- Partner with backend teams to help them adopt federation patterns and resolve technical blockers
- Improve gateway performance and observability, contributing to our shared GraphQL libraries
- Create documentation and share knowledge that helps product teams adopt patterns without needing specialized expertise
- Mentor junior team members and participate in code reviews that raise the bar for API quality
Our take
Wealthsimple is one of a crop of robo-advisors trying to democratise investment management. These companies are disrupting the industry by automating many of the processes involved in investment, removing the need for human advisors.
But while other so-called robo-advisors are focused on courting the high end of the market, Wealthsimple is trying to provide the same types of tools and advice to all users, regardless of the amount they have to invest.
Wealthsimple does have higher fees than some other robo-advisors such as Betterment and Charles Schwab. However, the company believes that it provides a more user-friendly platform, tailored to millennials who will be attracted to Wealthsimple due to its ease of use and social impact offerings.
