Role
Who you are
- 6+ years of backend software engineering experience, including 4+ years building distributed systems and scalable APIs
- Strong proficiency in backend languages (e.g., Python, C++, Java), experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and containerization technologies (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes)
- Deep understanding of distributed systems and cloud-native development practices
- Experience with high-performance computing and optimization of large-scale data processing pipelines
- Excellent communicator, with the ability to make high-quality technical decisions in a startup environment
- To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State
Desirable
- Experience building geospatial databases, geoquery tools, and mapping technologies, including relevant front-end techniques
- Familiarity with geospatial, remote sensing, and/or 3D data (e.g. SAR and optical satellite imagery, OpenStreetMap, LiDAR point clouds)
- Experience with 3D data processing, streaming, and/or visualization techniques (e.g. PDAL, Cesium)
- Experience building integrations with industry-leading GIS tools (e.g. ESRI, Mapbox)
What the job involves
- Ray Labs is seeking a Lead Geospatial Backend Software Engineer to architect and implement our distributed geospatial processing pipeline and data serving infrastructure
- The position will require working closely with frontend engineers, scientists, satellite engineers, and the product team
- Design and implement scalable distributed systems for processing and analyzing massive datasets from our satellite constellation
- Architect and maintain high-performance APIs and services for efficient geospatial data streaming, querying, and analysis
- Develop and optimize database schemas and storage solutions for managing petabyte-scale 3D geospatial data
- Lead the design and implementation of mechanisms for handling data ingestion, processing, and delivery pipelines
- Implement robust monitoring, logging, and operational systems to ensure reliability and performance of backend services
- Work with cross-functional teams to define technical requirements, architect solutions, and drive the backend roadmap in alignment with company goals

Our take
3D imaging is a growing market important to a wide array of industries, including climate action, defence, and insurance analytics. However, data supply chains from the satellites that provide this imaging to the people processing it are slow and expensive. Array Labs is developing innovative satellite imaging that can be delivered to its users almost in real-time.
Array Labs has taken part in two reputable accelerators since it was founded in 2021, and is attracting investors thanks to its plans to create a multifunctional 3D imaging satellite constellation above the Earth. Whilst this idea has been in play for decades, it is only recently that the dataset technology has caught up with the concept, and Array Labs is paving the way.
There’s still much work to be done to realise Array's ultimate vision, but it has got off to a promising start and has good funding at its back. Taking on the work ahead of it will rely heavily on partnerships with preexisting satellite companies.
