Company mission

To improve the UX of the internet.

Role

Who you are

  • We seek someone passionate about building scalable, reliable backend systems that power delightful customer experiences
  • We want someone who loves building front-ends and APIs that customers can take for granted because you never compromise on the quality of our products
  • This is the perfect job for someone who is willing to investigate complex problems and devise simple, high-quality, and delightful solutions
  • 8+ years of real-world experience building backend systems for web applications
  • 5+ years of experience writing production APIs (bonus points for GraphQL)
  • Experience using Typescript & Node.JS (It’s a plus if you have experience with other languages and Backend frameworks, too)
  • Experience with database technologies, such as Postgres, MongoDB, and Redis (bonus points for experience with sharding and replication strategies)
  • Excellent technical communication skills and enthusiasm for writing things down
  • Enthusiastic about testing and experience using test-driven development
  • Prefers simple solutions and designs over complex ones and has a good intuition for what will last and scale
  • Bonus: Hands-on experience with GraphQL performance monitoring and optimization tools (e.g., Apollo Studio, Dataloader)
  • Bonus: Experience with Visual Regression Testing and developing components in isolation before (e.g., used Storybook, etc.)

What the job involves

  • We want someone like you to work on the platform APIs and help with improving the system design for the Chromatic product, taking features from ideation to production
  • While your focus is on backend development, you’ll also have the opportunity to collaborate across the stack
  • MongoDB/GraphQL supports our back end, and we maintain a NextJS application on the front end
  • You’ll be part of a team that loves building APIs and systems that customers can trust and rely on
  • Build and maintain scalable, reliable backend systems in our TypeScript / Node.js / GraphQL / MongoDB stack
  • Design, develop, and refine APIs that serve internal and customer-facing products
  • Build and maintain data layers using technologies like MongoDB, Postgres, or Redis and ensure seamless data flow across systems
  • Work closely with the product team and full-stack engineers to help refine specifications and provide technical guidance
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams at the company to take full-stack features to production
  • Monitor and continuously improve our systems to maintain a quality standard and effectively respond to operational incidents
  • You will participate in the engineering team's support rotation. Because of our globally distributed team, this rotation is primarily during business hours

Our take

User Interfaces are set to be built exclusively by components in the future, meaning automated workflow maintenance solutions will be vital. Chromatic simplifies UI testing, maintenance, and collaboration, ultimately reducing the amount of manual work typically required for these processes, thus enabling accelerated project development and consistently refined UIs.

The company’s Chromatic software automates UI feedback, visual regression testing, and documentation workflows for the most popular open-source UI development tool, Storybook, which is used by thousands of companies worldwide (including Lyft, AirBNB, and GitHub) The company also counts the BBC, Auth0, and Shopify among its customers.

Backed by CRV, the company has focused on continued innovation of both Chromatic and Storybook, as well as expanding its presence across the UI market. The company is well set to continue on its current growth path as more companies adopt Chromatic’s system and new funding rounds boost its growth.
