Who you are
- We’re looking for highly motivated newly graduated students or early in career Software Engineers looking to start their careers on Collective's Product Engineering team
- This is an ideal opportunity for someone 0-2 years out of school who wants to work in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
- A recent graduate (0–2 years of experience) with a degree in Computer Engineering or a related field
- Excited about startups, ownership, and building quickly with a small team
- You’ve used a programming language deeply enough to build real projects, complete coursework, or contribute to a team, and you’re eager to learn more
- Familiar with modern web technologies, either through internships or academic projects
- Based in the Bay Area and are committed to a hybrid schedule (3 days/week onsite in SF)
- Curious, collaborative, and eager to grow

What the job involves
- You’ll work on financial products that directly impact self-employed individuals and small businesses across the U.S
- As a key contributor on our product engineering team, you’ll work closely with experienced engineers, product managers, and designers to build and scale core features of our platform
- If you're excited to ship fast, learn constantly, and have real product impact from day one, we would be excited to meet you
- Build and maintain core product features that are used by real customers every day
- Collaborate with product managers and designers to build a best-in-class product experience
- Contribute across the stack (Python/Django, React/TypeScript)
- Participate in technical discussions, code reviews, and planning sessions
- Learn from senior engineers and level up quickly
- Help shape our team culture, engineering practices, and technical foundation as we scale
- You’ll get hands-on experience building a product that makes a difference
- We’re a small, collaborative team that values learning, ownership, and thoughtful work
- You’ll work on challenging problems in the fintech space
Our take
Collective is tapping into the quickly growing freelance and self employed workforce with a back office platform which provides full support for accounting, tax, book keeping and other financial admin, essentially removing the burden from the business owner entirely.
Having only launched in 2020, Collective didn’t take long to receive major backing from General Catalyst as well as Ashton Kutcher’s VC fund Sound Ventures. It’s put it to great use too, with an employee headcount now in the hundreds, showing just how fast the startup is growing.
Interestingly, Collective isn’t available for any and all subscribers. Rather, it only allows applicants to become members if Collective’s advisors know they can offer real value. It may seem a counter-intuitive move, but it keeps the company’s success rate high.
The company's latest 2023 funding round is being used to accelerate the implementation of AI across its operations as well as onboard the nearly 100,000 waitlisted businesses. it launched an AI accounting platform for one-person operations in 2024, exemplifying the savvy use of its funds.
