Role
Who you are
- The ideal candidate has significant experience in fintech, financial services, or technology, with a proven track record of working cross-functionally in fast-paced environments
- Credit card experience is a strong plus
- J.D. and admission to at least one U.S. state bar in good standing (NY or CA preferred)
- 7 - 10 years of legal experience, ideally with a mix of top law firm and in-house experience in fintech, financial services, or technology
- Experience advising on regulatory/compliance issues related to fintech, payments, consumer lending, or credit cards, including TILA/Reg Z, ECOA/Reg B, UDAAP and FCRA
- Familiarity with the sponsor bank model and related regulatory requirements
- Working knowledge of privacy and data security laws and their application to consumer financial products
- Strong drafting, negotiation, and communication skills with attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with a proactive, problem-solving mindset
- Team-oriented, entrepreneurial, and eager to take on diverse projects as part of a small but growing legal team
What the job involves
- Imprint is looking for a dynamic Associate General Counsel - Product to join our growing legal team as our first product counsel
- This role offers a unique opportunity to help build the legal function and partner closely with our product, compliance, engineering, and business teams
- You’ll serve as a key advisor on regulatory, privacy, data security, and compliance issues that impact our product offerings, with a particular focus on the sponsor bank model, credit cards, and other consumer credit products
- This is a hands-on role where you’ll not only guide the development of innovative financial products but also support general commercial and SaaS contracting
- This role will report to the General Counsel & Chief Business Officer and be based out of the New York or San Francisco office
- Strategic Product Counsel. Serve as the key advisor on regulatory, privacy, data security, and compliance issues across Imprint’s credit card, consumer lending, and payments products
- Translate Law into Logic. Embed directly with product managers, engineers, and business leaders to shape product design and implementation decisions by communicating regulatory requirements in a practical, solutions-oriented manner that enables innovation with minimal friction
- Bank Partner Strategy. Support the structuring of products in alignment with the sponsor bank relationships, advocating for Imprint’s product direction with partner banks
- Regulatory Intelligence. Monitor legal and regulatory developments in consumer finance, payments, privacy, and data security, and proactively advise internal stakeholders on their impact to Imprint’s business
- Commercial Enablement. Negotiate commercial agreements, including SaaS, vendor, and partnership contracts
- Build Scalable Infrastructure. Contribute to building the foundation of the legal function by shaping culture, processes, tools, and strategy
Our take
These days, all sorts of cards abound, from virtual cards to co-branded credit cards. Imprint aims to stand out in the increasingly crowded space by partnering with businesses to provide branded rewards cards for customers.
While there has been an increase in the number of companies offering branded financial products to reduce costs, Imprint sees its card programs as offering a new platform for deepening customer relationships: less of the nastiness of credit and a much greater focus on rewards.
The startup is focusing on refining its embedded finance solution to fulfil its vision of an Apple-pay like experience for merchants and consumers.
Imprint will hope that its lightweight service, fit for smaller customers like hotel chains, will allow it to compete with the major venture-backed players in the space like Cardless, Apto and Alviere. And its $75M in venture capital raised in 2023 is going some way towards achieving these aims.
