Who you are
- You have experience developing impactful solutions to machine learning & NLP problems involving some or all of the following parts of the pipeline: data extraction, developing and training machine learning models, working the new model into production applications
- You have strong engineering and coding skills, with the ability to write high quality production code. Proficiency in Python, Scala, Java and/or other equivalent languages
- You have experience working with machine learning frameworks & technologies such as Tensorflow/TFX, PyTorch, Kubeflow
- You turn ideas into deeply reliable and well tested code that other people – or you, six months into the future – will find easy to comprehend and modify
- You are a mindful, empathetic, and communicative member of your team
- Continuous and recent experience of pushing production level Machine Learning code
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer II to join the Search Relevance team at Etsy
- We develop efficient, state-of-the-art, large-scale search models that sift through a universe of over a hundred million special, extraordinary items to help Etsy buyers find something they will love
- In this team, you'll closely follow the latest research and implement its best ideas efficiently, at scale for the benefit of Etsy's buyers
- Working hands-on with a cross-disciplinary team, you will deliver robust production models that will be A/B tested live on Etsy.com!
- We are leveraging state of the art LLM technologies to improve overall search relevance as well
- Does helping people find the perfect handmade or vintage goods from using the latest ML research sound exciting to you? If so, we could be the perfect match
- This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager, Search Relevance
- You will work in a cross-functional team to prioritize projects which help achieve our product targets
- You will build, deploy, test and maintain scalable machine learning models by applying the latest concepts in research and industry
- You will run various A/B experiments to improve search relevance
- You will work work closely with our product manager to help build roadmaps which range between a few weeks to 6-12 months
- Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law
Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. A hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers created significant discontent amongst sellers. Despite this, Etsy continues to connect artists and consumers, attracting shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
