What the job involves
- We are looking for Product Manager interns to join our Product Management and Emerging Technology & Incubation teams
- The Product Management team at Cloudflare sits at the intersection of software development, design, and business strategy
- We shape high-level product goals but also get our hands dirty
- We have ultimate responsibility for understanding our client needs, influencing business strategy, feature specification, and working with engineering to develop our software
- Cloudflare customers range from individual consumers to large multinational corporations and they use a wide range of products that help them make their sites and apps faster and more secure
- The Emerging Technology & Incubation team is where new, bold, products are built and released within Cloudflare
- Rather than being constrained by the structures which make Cloudflare a massively successful business, we are able to leverage them to deliver entirely new tools and products to our customers
- Cloudflare’s edge and network make it possible to solve problems at massive scale and efficiency which would be impossible for almost any other organization
- At any given moment Product Strategy is engaged in a half dozen projects, each driven by a small technical team of just a handful of developers
- Interns at Cloudflare get to explore and work with some of the newest and most innovative advances in security, networking and performance
- You will work closely with Software Engineers and designers to discover, invent, and build at the largest scale
- You will be exploring challenges in data mining, machine learning, privacy and security, networking, storage, data management, and much more
- You will be working in a fast-paced environment where you will be expected to take ownership of one or multiple features or products
- PMs at Cloudflare are very technical
- You will need a background in engineering, computer science, mathematics or statistics and are looking to explore a role that is very customer and business focussed
- You enjoy wearing multiple hats and have an entrepreneurial mindset
- Aside from working on impactful projects, you will network and meet with our executives including our co-founders
- All interns are paired with a mentor on the team to ramp up quickly and also with a buddy to connect with other folks across the company
- Interns will present on their project to the company at the end of the summer
Our take
Cloudflare is a multi-service global network that provides web security and infrastructure, DDoS mitigation services, and a content delivery network. Founded in 2009, Cloudflare has risen to become an industry giant, with around 25 million global internet properties on its network.
Cloudflare has been responsible for a number of admirable initiatives, offering free web protection to human rights groups, journalists, artists, and US election websites. This goes some way to counteracting the flak Cloudflare has received in some circles for the controversial groups and users who use its services. This chequered history, however, has not affected its over 80% market share in the content delivery network field.
This is perhaps in part because it has proven sharp at staying abreast of the rapidly morphing tech and digital space and customer demands. For example, Cloudflare is shifting to 100% renewable energy usage to create a zero-emissions internet, and in 2020 released a feature that would help users navigate data privacy regulations by selecting where their data is stored.
The cloud infrastructure market reached $53 billion in 2022. While the Big 3 (Amazon, Microsoft, and Google) own 65% of the market, that still leaves billions of dollars left for companies such as Cloudflare. Its ambitious and successful work is likely to continue being a crucial feature of the web, but in 2023, placed it in the crosshairs of hackers looking to exploit its infrastructure. The beginning of 2024 saw Cloudflare vow to bolster its security and patch vulnerabilities.
