- You communicate clearly and effectively, engaging with analytics, engineering, finance, operations, and executive stakeholders with ease
- You excel at building consensus, establishing prioritization rationale, and regularly communicating project status, research findings, and resolutions
- You embody the Compass Entrepreneurship Principles
- Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field; PhD is a plus
- 8+ years of experience in applied machine learning, data science, AI, or analytics consulting, with 3-5 years in management, recruiting, coaching and talent development
- Proven expertise in advanced analytics syntax (Python, R, SQL, etc.) and a strong command of ML frameworks. Experience with Spark and Scala is a plus
- Deep understanding of data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud). Strong preference for candidates w/ bespoke visualization experience using ds.js, bokeh, plotly, etc
- Strong background in statistical modeling, experimental design, and predictive analytics
- Exceptional problem-solving skills, with a knack for translating complex concepts into actionable insights
- A proactive mindset and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, constantly evolving environment
- Proven ability to explain complex ML/AI concepts and results to non-technical business users
What the job involves

- Lead, manage, and grow a dynamic team of data scientists and analysts
- Own the strategy and technical execution for predictive modeling and research initiatives
- Identify and prioritize opportunities where data science and machine learning can significantly impact Compass’s OKRs and enhance the success of our real estate agents, sales managers, and other regional staff in their local markets
- Stay ahead of the curve on emerging AI, ML, and data technologies; educate and share insights across the Data & Analytics organization
- Collaborate with senior business leaders, including C-level executives, to align data initiatives with business strategy
- Partner with Engineering & Analytics leadership to consistently evaluate and prioritize a cross-functional roadmap that delivers the highest impact to users
- Develop scalable analytic solutions and products that deliver tangible value to our stakeholders
Our take
Compass uses an AI-driven platform to smooth out and speed up the process of buying, selling, or renting property. It functions much like a traditional broker, but employs tech to reduce the time, uncertainty, cost and friction of transactions for buyers, sellers & agents.
It's disrupting a sector so far largely averse to tech innovation, allowing users to close deals in less time than the industry average of 30-45 days. Compass is now the largest independent real estate brokerage in the USA, with over 29,000 agents nationwide.
Despite being a leading residential brokerage and competing well, Compass has remained unprofitable. While the company is replanning its cost structure to be profitable over the next year, it announced its third round of payoffs in early January 2023. Its profit-generating plans include expanding into mortgages, escrow & title services.
