Role
Who you are
- At least 4 years of experience in data science or related roles
- Ability to write production quality code in Python and SQL
- Experience deploying machine learning / deep learning algorithms into production
- Proficiency in deriving data-driven insights in order to drive product decisions
- Experience conducting large scale A/B experiments
- A strong ability to communicate findings to non-technical stakeholders in a concise and engaging manner
What the job involves
- You’ll join our existing data science function here at Cleo; a thoughtful and collaborative team of 50+ dedicated data scientists, ML engineers, and analysts with significant industry experience that is at the heart of everything we do at Cleo
- You’ll build and deploy production models that developers will feed directly into the product
- This position is essential in the expansion of both product and business
- We are highly data driven, whether that be understanding natural language, deriving insights from financial data, or determining which financial product is best suited to a user. We have interesting problems to solve on an ever-increasing scale
- You'll have the chance to contribute to a highly significant workstream that has a direct impact on the company's financial performance, strategic decisions, and ultimately, the success of its customers
- Your role will involve collaborating closely with others to investigate and comprehend business issues
- You will use your analytical abilities to generate potential solutions and employ machine learning techniques to test and enhance processes and results
- Improving our current machine learning models and deploying into production
- Actively building and productionising classifiers - no dependencies on engineering teams
- A wide range of ML tasks: classification, recommender systems, NLP
- Collaborating with various departments within the organization, including product, operations, and commercial, to leverage machine learning and analytics in order to uncover opportunities for optimization
- Carrying out deep analysis into the core aspects to how Cleo runs to be able to fully understand the levers and propose opportunities to improve
- Working closely with engineers to make sure we collect the right data to produce relevant business insights

Cleo was one of the first companies to make great use of chatbots that sit within Facebook's messenger app. This chatbot-first approach and Gen Z user base have given it strong virality. It now has millions of registered users, 99% of which are based in the US, leading to a decision to take a year break from the UK market to focus on its US Gen Z customers. And after a successful year in the US its now eyeing up a return to the UK.
Its Series C funding will help the company to double down in the US, where it will make a significant increase in employee headcount, and enable Cleo to maintain and expand its service during an economic downturn.
Financial advice delivered via bots is a crowded space, so Cleo benefits from having a strong brand presence. It has gone for very bold, fun, Gen Z-focused messaging which helps it to stand out from competitors such as Emma, Plum, and Chip.
