What the job involves
- The Data Science Engineering (DSE) team consists of analytics engineers, data scientists, and software engineers with diverse educational backgrounds such as math, operations research, economics, computer science, engineering and business
- The team is responsible for enabling data-driven decision making and building data products at Wealthsimple
- Building a high quality and scalable state-of-the-art data warehouse that powers all decision making
- Leveraging machine learning and algorithms to help Wealthsimple build smarter financial products
- Using decision science to understand the cause and effect of our business decisions
- At Wealthsimple, the Financial Operating System (FOS) domain offers the fundamental financial building blocks necessary to develop our financial products
- The domain empowers our customers with a robust financial platform that delivers real-time insights, ensures impeccable data integrity, and creates trust building experiences
- We are hiring for an experienced hands-on Analytics Engineering leader to join our FOS leadership team. This individual will work on some of our highest priority initiatives, including optimizing our data infrastructure, enhancing our data models, and driving data-driven decision making across the organization
- The ideal candidate will ensure that our product strategy is well-grounded in data and analytics, leveraging their expertise to guide our teams in extracting meaningful insights from complex financial data sets
- Manage the partnership with our Product and Engineering teams to support works across some of Wealthsimple's highest priority efforts
- Lead a best-in-class team of data scientists and analytics developers and grow each individual
- Build robust, efficient, and integrated data models in cloud data warehouses that will be used as the source of truth for analytics across the Investing product organization
- Set organizational standards and influence our data science and engineering culture
- Apply software engineering best practices like version control and continuous integration to the analytics code base; ensure data models are well tested, documented, and maintained
- Translate business requirements into data models and analysis that will help stakeholders answer key business questions and inform strategic decisions
- Continuously look for the simplest, most effective way to approach challenges; Occam's razor is your friend
- Take ownership and ship it

Our take
Wealthsimple is one of a crop of robo-advisors trying to democratize investment management. These companies are disrupting the industry by automating many of the processes involved in investment removing the need for human advisors.
But while other so-called robo-advisors are focused on courting the high end of the market, Wealthsimple is trying to provide the same types of tools and advice to all users, regardless of the amount they have to invest.
Wealthsimple does have higher fees than some other robo-advisors such as Betterment and Charles Schwab. However, the company believes that it provides a more user-friendly platform, tailored to millennials who will be attracted to Wealthsimple due to its ease of use and social impact offerings.
