What the job involves

The Commercial Strategy team sits within the Business Development & Commercial Programs org and is responsible for helping take ideas from 0 to 1 by leading strategic initiatives and bets, and partnering cross functionally with other teams to test, experiment, and implement new strategies
In addition to driving new growth, the Commercial Strategy team owns and executes strategic growth programs that sit at the intersection of multiple teams and functions, and is the center of excellence for continuous improvement, focused on how to drive operational efficiency and rigor as we scale
The team goes where the problems are and are key to enabling future growth opportunities
The Commercial Strategy Manager is a high-impact “super generalist” role at Thumbtack
You’ll parachute into our most critical strategic imperatives - whether that’s standing up new initiatives from 0 to 1, unblocking growth opportunities, or driving operational excellence
Like most marketplaces, Thumbtack serves two sides: customers and pros
What makes this role unique is that it sits within our Partnerships organization, a fast-growing and increasingly important part of our business
In addition to enabling growth for our core marketplace, you’ll drive valuable impact shaping go-to-market (GTM) strategy for B2B partnerships as well
This is a fast-paced, fluid role in an organization scaling rapidly
You’ll work closely with executives, product and engineering leaders, marketers, sales, finance, etc
Identify and prioritize initiatives that support our biggest bets and create the greatest impact, while being agile and quickly pivoting as priorities change
Partner with teams across Thumbtack to identify opportunities, develop winning strategies, and effectively operationalize these strategies
Support critical projects (major initiatives and smaller bets) E2E from project identification all the way through project completion and follow up
Enable process improvements throughout the company to ensure operational rigor and excellence
Develop, test, and incubate new ideas (products and businesses)
Support ad hoc analysis and project work (e.g., board prep, planning, goal setting, competitive analysis)
Own, execute, and improve strategic programs that drive revenue and profitable growth
Perform financial analyses to inform resourcing, strategy and planning
Serve as the connective tissue across teams and functions, aligning stakeholders, harmonizing objectives, and driving progress

ThumbTack is a local services marketplace app that pairs customers with skilled professionals. Instead of simply searching for a professional, users provide ThumbTack with details of the job they need completing and the professionals then pitch their services to the potential customer using credits. ThumbTack makes its money by charging the professional for these credits.

It positions itself as something a little different in a saturated local services space that is dominated by companies like Angie’s List, TaskRabbit, Yelp, eBay, and Amazon. It also focuses on a broad range of professionals, from traditional home services like electricians and painters to photographers, personal trainers, and birthday party magicians.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw a boost in business for ThumbTack as more people stayed at home and made changes to their properties, increasing the demand for home professionals. In fact, after 2019, the company doubled in value to $3.2 billion with its 2021 raise. Now its updated app has 30 new features, and the company is partnering with the likes of trade-powering platform and Unicorn ServiceTitan, indicating Thumbtack's sustained sway in the market.
