Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of experience designing and building backend systems or developer platforms in distributed, cloud-native environments
- Familiarity with microservice architectures - including API design, service discovery, configuration management, and observability practices
- Strong programming experience in Java or similar language
- Nice to have - Experience with AWS or another major cloud provider, including infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform
- Nice to have - Experience with continuous delivery platforms (e.g. Spinnaker, ArgoCD, Flux, Jenkins, GitHub Actions)
- Nice to have - Experience with Kubernetes (EKS or GKE) and modern CI/CD practices for containerized workloads
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- This position requires the ability to access federal environments and/or have access to protected federal data. What the job involves
- Our scope includes core platform capabilities such as service bootstrapping frameworks, observability and tracing, inter-service communication (gRPC and eventing), libraries for metrics, rate limiting, and resilience, as well as service lifecycle tooling and governance
- We’re cloud-native by design, where scalability, reliability, and developer experience are first-class citizens. We partner closely with product and infrastructure teams to ensure that new services are secure, observable, cost-efficient, and easy to operate - from local development through global production scale

- Work with engineering teams across Okta to design, build, and evolve the Microservices Platform - enabling Okta teams to develop, deploy, and operate microservices efficiently and safely
- Design and implement shared frameworks, SDKs, and libraries that standardize service-to-service communication, observability, configuration, rate limiting, and resilience
- Build and maintain tooling for microservice bootstrapping, CI/CD templates, terraform templates, and developer experience workflows that accelerate service creation and onboarding
- Design and implement infrastructure-as-code (IaC) for scalable, repeatable provisioning of compute, networking, and storage using Terraform and AWS-native services
- Design and implement continuous delivery pipelines using tools such as Spinnaker, ArgoCD, or equivalent, ensuring reliable, auditable, and scalable deployment workflows for hundreds of microservices
- Develop frameworks and tooling for monitoring, tracing, and metrics collection, empowering teams to build observable and operable services
- Diagnose and resolve system performance, scalability, and reliability bottlenecks across distributed systems
- Collaborate with architects, product engineers, and operations teams to define and evolve Okta’s next-generation microservices ecosystem

Okta started off as an identity company where organisations, large and small, could tap into the company to have a single sign-on interface to access all cloud applications now centralised. Okta has since expanded to provide identity management at the device as well as the server level.
The new approach towards network security is increasingly based on identification and authentication, and Okta is on track to become the go-to vendor in the space. They aim to do so by developing products that enable people to access applications and other tools more smoothly and securely than ever before.
Okta has taken strides towards expansion through significant employee growth and shuffling executive leadership. The company has also made lateral moves such as tackling governance concerns, opening up new paths for revenue.
