Role
Who you are
- You have 5+ years' experience in visual design for digital platforms at either a creative agency, production company, or in-house creative team
- You have experience collaborating cross-functionally with UX designers, editors, project managers, marketers, as well as tech roles such as engineering
- You have a passion for WEBTOON and pop culture! (Comics, games, television, animation, film.)
- You have superior typography, color, and layout skills as well as a strong foundation in UX and UI design and a demonstrable understanding of the context and end product for your designs
- You are a master of Photoshop and Illustrator, and as a bonus have motion experience in After Effects or Premiere Pro
- Above all you are a team player who designs to delight our WEBTOON readers from the heart—not the ego
- We are looking for a detail-oriented, trendsetting designer, who is adept at problem solving to create breakthrough design solutions that are spot-on the brief
- A good candidate must also be comfortable operating autonomously as well as part of a team with excellent communication skill
- They will have experience creating event style guides, marketing campaigns, social media content and live events, with speed and superior typography, layout and color skills
What the job involves
- As a Visual Designer you will be a part of the team contributing to how our readers discover and engage with our brand and content across multiple platforms
- Work closely with Senior Designers and Art Directors in a highly-collaborative, inclusive, and fast-paced environment
- Design across our entire North American and Latin American digital content platform (app, mobile and desktop), as well as our social media channels
- Create eye-catching, elegant designs that engage readers and communicate key messaging clearly
- Follow global WEBTOON brand standards, while creating extensions unique to North America and Latin America
- Partner with video and motion creatives to ideate and art direct visuals for compelling digital and social ad campaigns to drive new user growth and retention
- Be a WEBTOON brand and audience expert—Help give clear, actionable feedback to external creative agencies and production companies
- Design across multiple channels as needed—including event design, OOH, merchandise, and supporting our social media creative team
- Juggle multiple priorities from stakeholders while maintaining clear communication with teammates to ensure projects are completed on-time and according to design standards

Our take
Content is king and Wattpad has managed to create a platform that aggregates the most loved original writing content in the world, turning the traditional publishing industry on its head.
Where authors used to submit drafts to dozens of publishing houses in the hope of getting some eyeballs on their work, Wattpad opened up the process to millions of young authors by letting them easily submit their work, and fostering a community around their software that offers feedback and help.
The e-reading platform is now looking to double down on its strategy of taking its user-generated fiction and turning it into successful intellectual property upon which original series and movies can be based. However, a significant challenge for Wattpad is in producing original, marketable content from its platform, given the popularity of fanfiction, stories which are based on existing intellectual property.
Another challenge for Wattpad is the current economic conditions, which have affected much of the tech sector and are not sparing digital publishing. Having shelved bold plans for the future, it also laid off 15% of its workforce in March 2023. Having realigned for its current business needs, however, it is now well placed to weather the current market downturn.

Allen lau
(Co-Founder)Lau attended University of Toronto where he earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering followed by a master's in the same subject. Thereafter he briefly worked as a software engineer for Brightspark before founding his first notable company, Tira Wireless, a mobile development startup. He is also the co-founder of Two Small Fish Ventures, a fund that invests in Toronto and Waterloo-based early-stage internet companies with strong network effects.
Ivan Yuen
(Co-Founder)Prior to Wattpad, Ivan co-founded FeedM8 and served as the company’s CTO. Before that he was one of the first employees of Tira Wireless, where he helped grow the technical team and developed new and emerging wireless technologies. Ivan graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Computer Engineering and also earned an MBA from the Rotman School of Management.
