Company mission

Social mobility and high-performance careers. Source outstanding graduates, provide world-class technical education and deploy them as high-performance technology consultants. An education B-corp operating in the Hire/Train/Deploy space.

Role

Who you are

  • A strong educational background (the institute is less important than the standards you’ve set for yourself, and the challenges you’ve overcome)
  • 5 years’ minimum professional experience in a delivery focused organisation (e.g. top tier management consultancy, a top tech company, or other high performance environment)
  • Prior experience mentoring, managing or working closely with junior talent in a high performance environment.
  • Prior experience conducting interviews
  • A strong understanding of business in general, and the roles that juniors play in them
  • Experience communicating confidently with a range of audiences and stakeholders, as well as excellent written communication skills, including managing documentation
  • Analytical with high EQ: sourcing talent from first principles rather than relying on easy heuristics requires understanding and solving complex human problems with data. This is not an HR function
  • Confident in learning and using data platforms and systems
  • The role requires an over achiever, comfortable working in a high performance, high cadence environment. As such, the role will almost certainly suit an ex-consultant, or someone who has worked with juniors in a high-performing environment
  • The ideal candidate will be highly adaptable, with a fungible skillset
  • Must have the right to work in the UK

Desirable

  • Experience in basic analytics and automations is an advantage
  • Experience using frameworks and methodologies to coach others is a plus

What the job involves

  • Source & Maximise High-Performance in Junior Talent
  • The Performance & Talent Lead is responsible for delivering against two main areas: 1) Sourcing graduates from low-income backgrounds with the potential to become top performing juniors (the social mobility part of our mission), and 2) Delivering high-performance coaching for our trainees and consultants, while working closely with clients on feedback mechanisms and promotion plans, and developing juniors with great potential (the high performance part of our mission)
  • The high-performance/non-technical training and coaching our trainees and consultants receive is loosely based on the Bain graduate programme. While our clients come to us for technically skilled consultants, it is the consultants’ professional behaviours that will ultimately determine their long term success. This is where the role focuses to maximise the consultants’ career success. The role has a unique benefit of working with our candidates, our trainees, and our consultants, across the full “lifecycle” of their Sigma Labs journey, supporting our HTD functions as we scale. Key responsibilities include:
  • Run the Hire function end-to-end: oversee 4 selection stages, liaise with internal and external stakeholders, and use our internal systems and automations to deliver high-quality results
  • Candidate selection: conduct behavioural interviews week to week, to select candidates with the potential for high-performance, and provide them with a wonderful experience with Sigma Labs. This includes simple but impactful feedback processes
  • Develop our attraction strategy: i.e. allocate resources across different channels to attract higher numbers of eligible candidates as we scale, whilst maintaining brand integrity
  • Insights and thought leadership: over time, further develop the science behind our hiring approach by deeply understanding assessment and coaching for high performance in juniors, and become an expert on what excellent junior professional behaviours and how to activate these
  • Analytics and data: all Hire, Train and Deploy functions are highly data-driven. You will collect and analyse data week to week to track progress, as well as derive insights over time to improve
  • Positive action: determining activities and interventions we can put in place to support our target candidates to succeed and reduce adverse impact on these groups
  • Delivering against a high performance programme: support the Deploy function to develop and deliver a programme that enables consultants to be high performers across their 2-years with clients and throughout their careers, including coaching for high performance; eventually, support high performance workshop and coaching delivery for our trainees within our Train function
  • Client impact: work with client line managers and senior stakeholders to review consultant performance, understand top performance in the client context, and manage consultant promotion pathways and conversion to permanent roles with our clients
  • Managing any external resources: manage and liaise with a number of external suppliers and partners to deliver outcomes across our hiring and training
  • Leaning-in: playing a key role in the team and doing whatever it takes to help us achieve the mission and principles, including contributing to our wider training programmes as needed

Application process

  • 1. Apply with your profile + a brief cover statement summarising relevant experience and your motivations
  • 2. 30 minute online interview with our Chief Product Officer
  • 3. 60 to 90 min in-person interview with the Chief Product Officer and Head of High Performance Talent & Training, including a case study/task (information provided in advance)
  • 4. Finally, a 30 min coffee with the CEO, with the opportunity to meet other members of the team
  • Please note, first stage interviews will commence during December and will run through to early January.

Our take

Sigma Labs trains high-performance technology consultants across software, data, and platforms. Sigma recruits promising graduates and provides them with intensive training that builds skills in full-stack software and data engineering as well as commercial and soft skills.

This results in the delivery of high-potential technical consultants for their clients, an approach that's both cost-effective and lower-risk. And after a 2-year development period, consultants can join our clients at no cost.

Sigma Labs operates in a crowded space, alongside more established players like FDM and the Kubrick Group who have trained tens of thousands of consultants each year. But Sigma's mission-driven approach and focus on social mobility stands out. They specifically seek out hardworking, curious graduates from lower-income backgrounds and place them into world-class organisations like BCG, Deloitte, EY, and McKinsey. If they can continue to make inroads in this space, they'll be able to unlock a previously untapped generation of talent.
