Who you are
- At least 5 years (Senior) or 7 years (Principal) of Product Design experience
- At least 2 years at a venture-funded startup in the last 4 years required
- The majority of your experience is in-house working on direct-to-consumer products
- You’ve worked in a high-velocity, experiment-driven environment
- An understanding of when to use the design process and when to shortcut it. Your process has predictably excellent output
- You can clearly articulate the reasoning behind your design decisions. Your work demonstrates intentionality and rigorous thinking
- Demonstrated ability to measure the impact of your work and its impact on the business
- A strong portfolio that demonstrates your ability to move quickly while producing high-quality work, including interaction details, visual polish, and content design
- Experience leading projects end-to-end, including discovery, problem definition, ideation, and validation, all the way through engineering implementation and measurement
- Experience in launching 0-1 products, not just iterating on something that already exists
- Ability to come into the San Francisco once a week if local to the Bay Area
What the job involves
- Designers at Ethos play an instrumental role in shaping every aspect of the product
- We work across the organization to develop novel solutions to large, interesting challenges, and build world class products that create real value for real people
- You will experiment, invent, and occasionally fail but most importantly, you will learn and advocate tirelessly for the customers you are creating products for
- Actively define design strategy across multiple business units
- Manage executive stakeholders across engineering, product, marketing, and more
- Identify opportunity areas to make large bets and align the organization to bring the desired impact into reality
- Partner with both Design and Research leadership to evolve the user experience
- Architect UI/UX for new products and iterate on existing ones
- Drive the product development process with cross functional partners
Our take
Ethos was founded to increase the transparency of life insurance, making it accessible and affordable to all. The company want to add openness to the process; losing a loved one is hard enough before one even considers financial implications, particularly with the loss of a primary earner.
Ethos uses predictive technology to rapidly quote life insurance rates and verify an applicant’s medical information. This expedited process allows most users to secure life cover on the same day they apply, a process which normally takes a number of weeks. The company works with some of the biggest providers in the industry, including Legal & General America, AAA Life and Ameritas Life Insurance Corp.
Ethos has been one of the more heavily publicised of the recent wave of insurtech companies, with investors such as Google as well as celebrities Will Smith and Jay Z, taking its valuation to over $2 billion. However, the sector is being hit particularly hard by macroeconomic uncertainty and Ethos conducted several rounds of layoffs through 2022 and early 2023. Now focused on its core product and revenue growth, it is poised to extend its market leading position.
