Role
Who you are
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years of experience managing a team of 5 or more engineers
- Extensive experience designing and building scalable, distributed systems, with a deep understanding of system architecture
- Experience with mission-critical backend systems, including performance optimization, fault tolerance, and horizontal scaling
- Proficiency in backend programming languages such as Ruby, Java, or Python
- Strong understanding of relational databases, caching, messaging queues, and event-driven architectures
- Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting systems such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, Honeycomb, or similar tools
- Confident in spending up to 20-25% of your time contributing by writing code alongside your team as your time and priorities permit
- Competent in setting expectations, giving transparent feedback, and creating a culture of psychological safety
- We understand that not everyone will be an expert in all of these areas on Day One. We value people and will consider someone with the fundamentals who wants to develop their skills
What the job involves
- Guideline is looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our Shared Experiences and Mobile teams
- As a manager within Guideline’s engineering organization, you'll work closely with Product and Design to establish roadmaps, provide mentorship and growth opportunities to your engineers, and be responsible for the impact of your teams
- We're a fast growing company and successful management means getting hands on with code and design reviews and playing a part in the continued development of our engineering team

Our take
When businesses offer a 401(K) plan, a message is sent to employees and potential employees that their future is valued by their employer. However, small businesses are often left behind, being charged extortionate fees or ignored by 401(K) providers altogether, leaving many American families with no retirement savings and the potential of retiring into poverty.
Guideline spotted this oversight as an opportunity to jump in and offer small businesses an affordable 401(K). It generates income by charging each business a flat monthly fee per participant.
The company now manages retirement plans for hundreds of thousands of people in over 40,000 companies and has accumulated over $8 billion in assets under management. Benefits providers Intuit, Gusto, and Square all use Guideline as their 401(K) partners.
