Before companies like Cuvva, the most recent consumer-facing innovation in insurance was through aggregators such as Moneysupermarket. However, the experience of using these is not great. The industry is known for low levels of customer support, confusing policies and needing to create a new account every time you want a quote.
Brokers and comparison websites add another step to the process, and charge companies they work with ~£70 on each policy sold, which is passed on to the customer in the form of higher policy costs.
Cuvva's focus on customer service is unusual in insurance, but it's providing them a winning edge. They are trying to make insurance more about the experience than simply the price of the policy. It seems to be working so far, as they’ve got a lot of great customer reviews. The challenge will be scaling this support (it’s notoriously hard to scale great customer service when you’re growing fast).
For an industry where brand loyalty is currently near zero (because people go for the cheapest policies) there could be a big opportunity for a company that provides an end-to-end amazing experience and cuts out the middlemen.

Cuvva has a really open and honest level of communication. Anyone can pull Freddy, the CEO, for a chat if they wanted. We've always had opportunities to raise our voices and opinions if needed, and the culture is such that even if we're questioning something, there won't be any ramifications. Just open dialogue.

No day is boring. Pretty much every day has a lot to do. A lot of work to push you and deliver good work. There are complexities in the product that you need to break down and analyse for all stakeholders. It's challenging to do but rewarding to achieve.

Clear progression framework for each role. The people team tries a lot to create a structure that you agree with and you can benchmark against. Your manager has regular 1-2-1 and quarterly and yearly reviews make sure you are on track with useful feedback from your main colleagues.

LOADS of opportunities to learn. I started at Cuvva 4 years ago in customer operations. Managed to grow within the team and then break off into a sub team focusing on fraud. Then I managed to learn SQL and model structures, then joined the data team as an analyst and in turn an engineer. Loads of people with loads of information to help you progress. Only thing is you got to put in the time to learn.

I've never not received help when I ask for it, and more often than not it's offered before I've had to ask. Cuvva prioritises the mental and physical wellbeing of the team consistently & carefully. We have a DIB team that runs events, talks, creates fair policies and raises awareness for issues that face our staff. Cuvva offers a wellbeing budget to each team member to ensure we're looking after ourselves. We have mental health coaching through Sanctus, and LifeWorks as a wellbeing platform available to everyone. We also have trained Mental Health First Aiders throughout the company & a continued conversation about struggles people might face at work and in life.
