Role
Who you are
- A degree in Computer Science or a comparable qualification
- 6+ years of software development experience, in fast-paced, product-driven teams
- Deep expertise in backend technologies: PHP with Symfony framework, Python, and Go
- Strong database design and optimization skills with MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and others
- Experience building scalable backend systems and integrating third-party APIs
- Proficiency in React and front-end development
- Strong testing practices (unit, integration, e2e) and CI/CD familiarity
- Excellent written and spoken English
Desirable
- Experience with e-commerce or rental/subscription platforms
- Familiarity with EasyAdmin and Sulu.io CMS
- German language skills
What the job involves
- You will be working closely together with our lean, cross-functional team in the areas of strategy, operations, logistics, and product. We work in a hybrid model and meet twice a week at our Charlottenburg office. Our primary working language is English, but internal team interactions are often in German
- Design and develop features that enhance mobility and user experience
- Automate workflows from vehicle delivery to final invoicing
- Integrate 3rd-party APIs (logistics, cross-platform, etc.) with scalable backends
- Build self-service tools that empower customers to manage their subscriptions
- Collaborate with product and operations to define clear, testable requirements
- Make an immediate impact on a growing product used by thousands of customers
- Work closely with product leadership to shape the roadmap
- Take ownership in a fast-moving, collaborative, and low-bureaucracy environment
Our take
Car-sharing provides a convenient and cost-effective alternative to car ownership, particularly in large cities where congestion is high and parking space is at a premium. Founded in 2016, MILES has made it easy for German and Belgian commuters to get around without owning a car or getting on a bus.
The German ride sharing sector is quite heavily contested, and while MILES is one of the larger providers it lacks the customer base of its primary rival SHARE NOW. Where it hopes to compete is in its pricing plan, which is measured by distance rather than minutes, providing a less pressured experience for its customers. So far this has worked well for the company, allowing it to multiply its revenue year on year and achieve profitability only four years after its founding. It currently serves more than 200,000 customers and has a fleet of over 13,000 vehicles.
MILES acquired the car sharing arm of Volkswagen in 2022 and integrated it into its own offering. Aside from increasing the size of MILES' fleet part of the deal allows VW customers to book cars through their existing VW mobility app, increasing MILES' customer base. MILES' is working to increase the electrification of its fleet, expand its market presence in Germany and Belgium, and develop new products for its customers such as longer-term rentals and city-to-city rides.
