Role
Who you are
- We are looking for an experienced Site Reliability Engineer to join Okta in our Emerging Products Group
- This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working on large scale cloud production systems and gains pride from seeing those systems handle anything the Internet can throw at them
- If you like to be challenged and have a passion for solving problems at scale with modern tooling, automation, testing, and tuning, then we would love to hear from you
- The ideal candidate is someone who exemplifies the ethics of, “If you have to do something more than once, automate it,” and who can rapidly self-educate on new concepts and tools
- A strong individual contributor who leads by example
- Expertise with AWS and/or GCP required, multi-cloud experience is highly desirable
- Technical excellence with Kubernetes (GKE, EKS, kOps, etc) deployments in cloud environments, and the ability to tackle containerization challenges for large, complex workloads
- A proven track record of successful SRE engagements, collaborating closely with engineering teams across a wide range of infrastructure domains
- Proficiency in distributed systems design, with a comprehensive understanding of failure modes, benefits, and potential drawbacks
- Strong expertise with operating customer-facing production services
- Extensive experience with configuration management tools like Helm and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform
- Familiarity with DevOps culture and practices and experience with CI/CD toolchains
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages, particularly Golang or Python
- In-depth knowledge of various types of data stores, particularly PostgreSQL, Redis, OpenSearch
- Passionate about automation
- Deep background in Linux systems administration
- Solid understanding of networking concepts and IP protocols

- Design, build, and operate Okta's global production infrastructure
- Daily coding, scripting, and development - Go, Python, Terraform, etc
- Support a highly available and large scale multi-cloud environment as part of an on-call rotation
- Engage with engineering teams across the company, guiding and empowering them to adopt best practices for reliable and secure service deployment
- Collaborate on modernizing existing workloads, aligning them with our continuous platform improvements
- Identify manual processes and drive the development of cutting-edge automation tools to streamline operations
- Contribute to our mission of building a more robust, elegant, and scalable system through the creation of innovative tools, platform capabilities, and comprehensive documentation
- Demonstrate your expertise by responding swiftly and efficiently to production incidents, diving deep into complex systems failures to drive team and organization learning, and pushing forward technical and process improvements
Our take
Okta started off as an identity company where organisations, large and small, could tap into the company to have a single sign-on interface to access all cloud applications now centralised. Okta has since expanded to provide identity management at the device as well as the server level.
The new approach towards network security is increasingly based on identification and authentication, and Okta is on track to become the go-to vendor in the space. They aim to do so by developing products that enable people to access applications and other tools more smoothly and securely than ever before.
Okta has taken strides towards expansion through significant employee growth and shuffling executive leadership. The company has also made lateral moves such as tackling governance concerns, opening up new paths for revenue.
