Role
Who you are
- J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school and be an active member in good standing of a state bar
- 7+ years’ experience in a law firm or in-house corporate department, with strong and well-established background and knowledge of global privacy, security, and data localization laws (such as GDPR, CCPA, COPPA, FERPA)
- Privacy certification such as CIPP/US, CIPP/EU, CIPT a plus
- Creative and solution oriented, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Tech-savvy with a willingness to learn more
- Comfortable with taking initiative and leading projects
- Excellent judgment and analytical skills with the ability to strategically assess and mitigate risk, while achieving business goals
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills; ability to simplify complex legal requirements
- Collaborative team player who subscribes to the philosophy that there is no “I” in team; a can-do attitude, with a willingness to “roll up your sleeves” to get the job; dedicated worker who is responsive and provides timely advice
- Prior in-house experience ideally at a tech company is strongly preferred but not required
What the job involves
- This position at Turnitin will report to the Vice President, Deputy General Counsel and will be a key member of the Turnitin legal team
- The attorney will assist with the development, refinement and execution of the Company’s privacy strategy, working closely and in tandem with the Engineering/Tech, Product, Information Security and Marketing teams on matters relating to data privacy, security, technology and related compliance
- Provide legal advice, guidance and support on a wide variety of global privacy program needs, including privacy requirements, privacy impact assessment activities, privacy by design leadership, data governance, contracting and incidence response
- Analyze, document and communicate the impact of privacy laws, regulations and updates on the business and operations to internal stakeholders, including developing, updating and/or revising privacy policies and related procedures as necessary and appropriate
- Support privacy and compliance risk assessments to identify existing and emerging risks and support the development of practical business processes to minimize such risks
- Review and/or draft privacy agreements, including vendor and customer contracts (such DPAs and related documents)
- Monitor and remain current on changes to global privacy, security and compliance laws, regulatory enforcement and industry landscape to stay ahead of evolutions, trends and best practices to inform privacy strategy and program roadmap
- Design and deliver awareness and training to internal global audiences
- Assist in managing outside counsel in privacy, security, compliance and consumer related investigations and litigations, as well as in acquisition due diligence and general counseling matters
- Support privacy and compliance due diligence and subsequent company integration in corporate acquisitions, investments, and other business initiatives
Our take
Turnitin has a global reputation for being one of the best plagiarism detection softwares on the market. It’s well-earned, too. Besides simple paraphrasing plagiarism, its software also employs sophisticated techniques like identifying macro replacement and analysing metadata to weed out essay mill papers.
Academic plagiarism has become increasingly complex over the years, exacerbated in part by the COVID period of online schooling, and in part by a skyrocketing rise in computer literacy and plagiarism tricks. Software like Turnitin is therefore playing an increasingly crucial role in maintaining academic integrity. Additionally, it helps understaffed institutions ease the burden placed on a teaching workforce which are, in some regions, perilously close to collapse.
Turnitin is not without its issues, however. Some institutions lean too heavily on the software, and essay mills have begun using Turnitin software to prove product authenticity. Historically, Turnitin has neatly addressed these problems by releasing new or improved capabilities including Chat GPT screening updates in 2023. If it can continue to demonstrate remarkable competence and proactive development in this regard, Turnitin’s glowing reputation seems assured.
