Role
Who you are
- This role is ideal for a strong product counsel , who is comfortable taking a generalist approach in learning new areas of the law, and who thrives in a fast-moving, highly regulated environment and wants to deepen expertise while shaping how products are built
- J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to at least one U.S. bar
- 7+ years of experience practicing law, with meaningful experience in product counseling, privacy, consumer protection and/or technology law (in-house experience strongly preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with product and engineering teams and deliver clear, actionable legal guidance to non-lawyers
- Experience learning and understanding the complexities of highly regulated products
- Ability to calibrate risk based on business objectives and stage of product, approaching legal counseling with a solutions-based response
- Deep knowledge of consumer protection laws, global privacy frameworks, and product risk management, with a curiosity to deepen expertise in emerging areas such as AI and data governance
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts in a concise, approachable way; and
- A collaborative mindset, ownership mentality, and desire to grow within a scaling legal team
- An A-player mindset with a strong bias for action: you raise the bar, move with urgency, stay resilient through ambiguity, and take ownership to deliver meaningful outcomes
What the job involves
- Reporting to the Director of Legal, Product & Privacy, the Product Counsel will provide hands-on, solutions-oriented legal guidance across product development, advising on legal compliance with privacy, consumer protection, and emerging AI laws
- You’ll help teams move fast while managing legal and regulatory risk, partnering closely with Product, Engineering, Sales, and Customer Success to launch and scale compliant, customer-ready products
- Provide day-to-day legal counsel across Checkr’s products, partnering with Product and Engineering throughout the product lifecycle, from early design through launch and iteration
- Advise on consumer protection, privacy, and data protection issues impacting Checkr’s products, including FCRA, CCPA/CPRA, GDPR, AI-related risk, and related global frameworks, with guidance calibrated for product maturity and use case
- Partner with Sales and Customer Success to respond to customer inquiries, support strategic deals, and explain product compliance clearly and credibly to external stakeholders
- Monitor regulatory developments, enforcement trends, and litigation affecting Checkr’s products and act as a thought leader, turning complex developments into actionable guidance for product teams and customers
- Contribute to scaling the Product & Privacy legal function by improving processes, templates, and playbooks that help the team move faster and reduce friction
Our take
Checkr addresses the unpleasant and time consuming process of background checks so that companies using on-demand employees can make safer, more informed hiring decisions in less time. Background checks are a critical part of the hiring process, and CEO Daniel Yannisse noticed that they were painfully slow, resulting in loss of work for candidates and productivity downturns for employers.
Before Checkr entered the market in 2014 with its innovative AI technology and a solid $50m in venture capital funding, companies were waiting upwards of two weeks for their checks. Checkr substantially reduces this time frame and has grown to receive a $5 billion valuation.
Checkr has accelerated growth by making several highly advantageous acquisitions of competitor companies GoodHire and Inflection. As the world of work embraces diversity and inclusion, the company announced an end-to-end service for candidates wishing to expunge their criminal records, furthering the company’s ‘fair chance’ mission and clearing 1000s of candidates for free since 2021. New products launched at the end of 2023 include Checkr Pay (providing access to payment right after a shift) and Checkr Onboard (unified onboarding processes), exemplifying how Checkr is keeping pace with a rapidly changing, flexible, and mobile-first workforce.
