Our take
Quill’s team messaging app distinguishes itself from Slack and its other peers by focusing on a user experience that encourages focused work, rather than app engagement. It attempts to do this with a focus on more structured channels, easier navigation and limited notifications. For example, exclamation marks in messages trigger a notification for the receiver, while video chats have automatic messaging sidebars.
Founded by former Stripe creative director Ludwig Petterson, Quill is taking a daring approach entering a market already dominated by Slack and Microsoft Teams. There are plenty of similarities to Slack in the product and business model: both have leant on a freemium model and offer individual chats, as well as channels, video and audio calls. However, Quill is aiming to stand out by doing away with the distraction and resulting frustration that Slack and Teams are known for.
Headed up by an impressive team and strong investment, the company came out of stealth in 2021.
