Role
Who you are
- 4-5 years of experience across one or more of the following: campaigning, media, comms, brand, public relations, advocacy
- 1-2 years of management experience of managing a team of at least 2 persons
- German professional proficiency (not less than C1)
- You have management experience and are empathetically able to support team members’ well being and growth, whilst coaching them deliver high results and building a culture of high performance
- Ability to lead through change, working in a nimble, flexible way depending on the highest company priorities
- Solution oriented, able to elevate the needs of your team and market, and offer clear solutions to solve problems that emerge
- You are a strong project manager, who is able to organize work, keep a project on track, work in an agile way where necessary, and support a team to deliver ambitious goals
- You have your finger on the pulse of what people across Germany are talking about online, in politics, and traditional media. You have a good understanding of the current social justice, economic, political and environmental issues facing Germany
- You have a strong network with journalists, activists and decision makers in Germany
- You are an expert in written and oral communication. You have an insightful understanding of messaging and framing, and the judgment to repeatedly find the right message to engage Change.org users, decision makers, journalists and other stakeholders. You can draft a compelling copy in a short amount of time
- You have a strong background in media/ PR or journalism, and come with innovative ideas to turn campaigns into powerful stories in the media and inspire new audiences
- You have strong media skills, you know how to make a highly effective pitch and to develop a media strategy that would gain attention of decision makers and the public
- You are willing to work across difference, including providing support to policy-compliant campaigns that you may not agree with but align with Change.org’s commitment to being an open platform. You are committed to our mission of empowering people to win campaigns on what is important to them
- You have a can-do, positive attitude, are self-motivated and keen to learn. You thrive working in a fast paced and data-informed news or tech environment, and are willing to take risks, fail, learn and adapt
- You are low-ego and you’ve got a strong sense of fun and give-and-take -- our small team is constantly pushing each other to challenge assumptions, go all-in, and imagine the impossible
What the job involves
- This role is an exciting opportunity to lead Change.org’s Brand Campaigning team in Germany - managing an operation to successfully amplify powerful stories of petition starters, in the media and across digital channels, to inspire audiences to engage and start their own campaigns
- You will be developing an ambitious media and marketing strategy for the brand in Germany, developing relationships across both media and digital platforms, in order to increase awareness and affinity with key audiences
- Mange a small squad of campaigners within the Brand Campaigning function to support compelling petitions and movements on Change.org and amplify them through media
- Organize team processes to center compelling issues and news stories that could develop into brand-driving movements on Change.org
- Elevate the team needs to the Group’s leadership and set a team-level culture of hard work, experimentation, adaptability, and fun
- Manage your squad’s portfolio of petitions. Divide work to support petition starters to optimize their campaigns, implement smart tactics, reach decision makers, organize digital and in-person tactics, etc. Lead on the storytelling of these impact moments to Change.org users and a wider media audience
- Develop media strategies to drive impact and brand awareness around campaigns in Germany. Help upskill your team members to be able to drive media with little support and oversight
- Build and maintain relationships with media, organizations, activists, and community leaders in key issue areas to facilitate the use of our platform for social change. Act as a spokesperson for Change.org in Germany when needed
- Collaborate with other functional leads to hone a global brand strategy, contributing to department strategy, goals and culture

Our take
Change.org is a global online website that has hosted millions of petitions since it launched in 2007, including dozens of notable cases that have led to significant worldwide change. Of interest, too, is its voluntary 2021 recognition of its staff’s labor union; at the time it was the largest tech company to do so.
Change.org remains the leading player in online petitions, generating revenue from petition promotions and subscription memberships. This revenue has raised some eyebrows - but Change.org has successfully withstood skepticism about its legal status as a business rather than a non-profit. It has demonstrably facilitated speed and scale for the social change platform and has allowed the company to comfortably retain salaried employees.
The company has become the world's largest nonprofit-owned tech platform after it transitioned to 100% nonprofit ownership following donations of equity from its investors including Reid Hoffman, Bill Gates, and Richard Branson. However, Change.org has not been immune from the global economic crisis, and in response, it aims to innovate its platform by updating its internal tools and engineering capabilities. Regardless, the company is here for the long run and is used in around 200 countries, with over 70,000 campaigns launched on its platform each month.
