Who you are

  • 6+ years of experience as in-house, startup, or financial services counsel
  • Law Degree from an accredited law school
  • Bar admission in good standing in at least one US state or jurisdiction
  • You absolutely must have experience with credit cards
  • Familiarity with payment products
  • Working knowledge of BSA/AML/OFAC/KYC, Fair Lending/ECOA, Reg B, TILA/Reg Z
  • Dynamic multi-tasker who can juggle multiple priorities and complexities with ease

What the job involves

  • As the Flexbase Director of Legal, you’ll take a key spot on the team, leading the efforts to navigate all of the legal and regulatory rules that apply to our products. Your guidance will be instrumental in keeping us on the right side of regulatory issues, ensure that our work with bank partners is always best in class, and you’ll enable us to unlock more opportunities by using our regulatory knowledge as a competitive advantage
  • We are looking for someone with the drive and passion to be a true subject matter expert for our teams
  • But this isn’t just an advisory role. We want someone who’s at home thinking about how to build something new. A lot of counsel are adept at answering the questions that their product team asks. We’re looking for someone who can certainly do that . . . but we also want someone who can push us forward by coming up with their own creative solutions, even to questions that have not yet been asked
  • We’re moving fast in a number of directions so we’re looking for someone who is nimble, driven, and wants to face new challenges on a daily basis. We’re not launching one product to market, but instead creating a suite of products to reimagine financial services for entrepreneurs. Your focus will be both deep and wide as you’ll have a hand in all of what we’re bringing to market
  • You prefer to roll up your sleeves and immerse yourself completely, enjoying being one of the company’s resident experts
  • Flex is moving in a lot of directions and is seeking someone with hands-on knowledge working with credit cards and payments products.
  • We also need someone who knows how to work with product and engineering teams to build and launch new products/services, and has subject matter expertise in several regulatory areas, like MSB/MTL rules, card rules (both consumer and commercial preferable), and all of the attendant things that go along with credit products like BSA/AML/KYC, Adverse Action/Reg B, TILA/Reg Z
  • We’d also expect that you’d thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. This is a role for that person who likes to get creative, while still being able to provide grounded counsel to ensure that we build the best products possible without missing a beat on the legal requirements
  • Reporting directly to Flex’s General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer, you will be a key part of the Legal and Compliance team, and will have a major impact on the products we launch and build in the future

  • Ok, it’s a little more complex than that. You’ll need to be nimble, to prioritize your time, know when to go deep into theory and when you just flat out have to execute.
  • You need to be able to handle the ups and downs of a startup, and know that things can change weekly, daily, and even sometimes, hourly. You’ve got to be comfortable with the grey-space. You’re not always going to have perfect information, but we’re still going to need advice on how to move forward

Our take

Flex, formerly known as Flexbase, supplies credit and finance management tools for small and midsize business (SMBs). At the core of its offering is a credit card, with a complimentary platform that collects all finance operations into one easy-to-manage app.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of Flex's approach is the credit card itself, which comes with 0% interest for 60 days. Through this, businesses can improve their cash flow and be more free to invest in growth. Besides this, users can also issue virtual employee cards at no extra cost, and use functions such as receipt capture and free ach/wire payments.

Having steadily grown its offering over the years, Flex has now raised a significant funding round to expand its business and accelerate growth. Demand for its solutions has already moved the company to expand beyond its initial focus on the construction industry to target clients across logistics, eCommerce, real estate and other sectors. After raising $120 million in September 2023, Flex has proceeded to launch its own app - the finance super app - to streamline the finance back office for business owners.
