Role
Who you are
- We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to join our Core Platform Engineering team in a hybrid role
- You are experienced and passionate about building products and systems that make a meaningful impact on the lives of thousands of people and their health
- Your ideal work environment is a space in which it is safe to experiment, challenge yourself and others, but also to fail and learn
- We are looking for candidates located in either Vancouver, BC or the San Francisco Bay Area
- 10+ years experience in backend engineering, ideally working on core platform teams
- Proven experience in Python (FastAPI, Flask) and GraphQL; familiarity with containerized dev environments
- Expertise with modern CI/CD tooling (GitHub Actions, CircleCI, etc.) and cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
- Familiarity with breaking apart monoliths into micro-services, including service boundary definition and communication patterns (REST, GraphQL, event-based)
- Hands-on experience implementing and managing secure OAuth-based authentication systems (Auth0 or similar)
- Experience designing systems that handle sensitive data (PII, healthcare/regulated environments a plus)
- Strong knowledge of databases (Postgres, DynamoDB, or equivalent)
- Excellent communication skills and ability to thrive in ambiguity
Desirable
- Experience navigating the challenges of a startup transitioning into a scale-up, including evolving systems, processes, and team structures
- Experience with frontend technologies like React, TypeScript, or Node.js
- Hands-on experience with contract testing frameworks (e.g., Pact)
- Experience with healthcare data (DICOM, PACS, EMR systems, HealthLake, etc.)
- Familiarity with security and privacy standards (e.g., HIPAA, ISO 27001, ISO 13485)

- Drive improvements to our authentication platform, including OAuth flows and Auth0 integration
- Untangle tech debt and make high-leverage decisions that unblock engineering productivity
- Design secure, scalable systems to handle sensitive health and identity data
- Mentor engineers across the team and elevate engineering standards
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Security, QA, and Clinical stakeholders
- Research and advocate for technologies that level up developer experience and system robustness
Our take
The quantified self movement is gaining momentum, especially in the health and fitness sector. Wearable health monitors, sleep trackers, and genetic testing have all firmly entered the mainstream, and body MRI scanning service Prenuvo is taking this concept to the next level. Prenuvo’s whole body diagnostic imaging offers customers a comprehensive picture of their body, whilst screening for 500+ major conditions and cancers.
The medical benefits of approaching these diseases proactively, as opposed to reactively, are substantial. Customers will be able to catch warning signs early, meaning treatment is likely to be less invasive, with a higher success rate. Unfortunately North America, like many regions, has yet to make substantial investments in preventative healthcare. This just makes companies like Prenuvo, and the VCs who fund them, increasingly necessary.
This funding, however has been substantial, and having closed a Series A funding round in 2022 Prenuvo has moved swiftly to open new clinics across the United States. Its next step is to improve the accessibility of its service - currently scans cost about $1000, but improvements in the technology and working processes will cut the cost by two thirds or more and greatly expand Prenuvo's addressable market.
