The landscape of vehicles is rapidly changing with automation and robotics seeing application in cars, trucks, and even spacecraft. Whilst airplanes have seen semi-automatic pilot modes for decades, a human pilot is still required to finetune automated processes and to conduct routine tasks such as taxiing and landings.
Reliable Robotics provides self-driving technology to allow small cargo planes to make routine cargo deliveries without a pilot. Founded by former SpaceX and Tesla engineers, the company claims that all cognitive abilities required to fly a plane can be automated through machine learning and remote pilot assistance. This will allow cargo planes to utilize the thousands of smaller airports and rural landing strips that are currently underused due to the difficulty of manual landing in areas with poor infrastructure.
The company has attracted significant funding over the years, which is being used in research and development and improving the capabilities of its autonomous aircraft systems. Going forward the company plans to outfit larger cargo planes with its technology, and eventually trial autonomous passenger flights. In 2024, it won funding from the US Airforce, indicating the military sectors interest in Reliable's technology.
