The new forefront of gaming is virtual reality - put on a headset and you get to experience a new world from inside it, rather than through a screen. Sidequest is riding the VR wave with its app marketplace designed to support VR developers.
It’s a store for VR apps compatible with Meta’s Quest VR headset, but it’s unique in that it allows users to download early release content from developers before final versions are published in Meta’s official app store. It helps developers by essentially providing market testing, while giving gamers a wealth of exclusive new content.
Sidequest has gained significant early funding from Google's venture arm GV, despite its partnership with rival Meta’s technology, and the links to these two tech giants give it a seat near the head of the table of this burgeoning industry. Funding is focused on expanding features to support developers, such as offering more extensive developer tools as well as developing its own games in-house. In 2023, Sidequest set up a $1 million fund alongside augmented reality developer Creature to invest in indie VR game developers, exemplifying its influence in the space.
